The Chinese characters are from a poem written by the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai. It is hard to translate them completely. The four characters on the flute is a description for the beautiful sound of Dizi flute.

There may be some confusion- starting with the word 'key' - dizis don't have any keys like modern western woodwind instruments. My D dizi is also about 24 inches in total length and has only a number of holes- in fact 12 in total. Starting at the end that is blocked, the embrochure hole across which one blows is about nine inches down and is followed by the dimo hole which is to be covered with a membrane, about three Inches further. Another about three inches down start the six finger holes on a standard D dizi,with three for the left hand followed by three for the right hand (if being played in the typical fashion with the dizi going towards the player's right although it can equally well be played in the reverse).The distances of the next five holes for the fingers are approximately 2.3 then 2.7 then 3.5 then 2.0 then 3.3 cm which in British units correspond to about 7/8, 1 1/8, 1 3/8, 3/4 and 1 5/16 inches. The remaining four holes close to the open end of the dizi are not used in playing, but create an openness (the two longitudinally arranged on the top in lime with the other eight holes) and to hold the decorative tassell (two transverse on the bottom). Virtually any adult can readily spread their three fingers by the totals of 2 inches (5 cm) and 2 1/16 inches (5.3 cm) needed to 'operate' that dizi, although some of the larger dizis can be a challenge for people with small hands.
