Excellent Power, Nice to Use.
After about a year of use, I really like this grinder. It replaces an older 4", that I used for years, but it finally wore out the gears. This replaces it with more power, speed control, larger disk, and it's not really heavier. I really like it. If there is one suggestion, there is a pause between when you move the switch and when it acts. That keeps getting me - as I think I have not positioned the switch correct, so I turn it off again, but it starts spinning then stops. Not the best behavior. Have to turn it on and wait a couple seconds, then it starts up and does a great job. Just something niggly that I takes getting used to. Overall, I love the tool.

Love the variable speed. Quality tool
I have been using 4 1`/2" grinders for about 30 or 40 years. I'm 72. I've always had the one speed 10,000 rpm ones and used 5" discs with them. I do mostly small boat building and use them for wood shaping, but also sometimes for metal or concrete work. I always though variable speed would be nice, but then I've had Porter Cable VS 6' sanders for years too. I finally coughed up the bucks for this Makita and just love it. I find myself using the lower speeds a lot and there is a lot less chance of digging into the wood further than I want to go. So I use it where I might have used the 6" sander before because it is faster and I don't have to worry so much about damaging the work.

bad quality
Just 4 days after the 30 days period to return them the 2 grinders I bought stop handeling the polishing pads we use for our work and the seller said he wasn't able to help me because of that period, but if you spend almost $500.00 dolars on some tools you spect them to work at least one year or more, not just one months and 4 days.

This things is solid.
I bought this in order to convert it into a high speed paint remover. So far its been working awesome. The biggest problem I had was finding a way to do it that was cost effective. Most backer pads are made for orbital sanders not grinders so the arbor sizes don't match. However STADEA makes a 5" hook and loop backer pad that fits this thing perfectly. That coupled with my dustless technologies dust shroud and hepa vac means I can take off a lot of paint in a short period of time with very little to no mess. The one thing I did in order to improve the effectiveness of the dust shroud was drill holes into the STADEA backer pad that lined up with the 5 hole hook and loop sander discs I had. So far I have been very happy with this set up. And the fact that this thing is variable speed makes a world of difference. It would be next to impossible to do a good job at paint removal with a grinder turning 10,000 RPM's, I turn this down to its lowest setting and its about as fast as I would want in order to be able to control it. However I like the fact I can crank it up if I want to grind concrete, cut rebar, or do any of a number of other things with this thing. I highly recommend it.

Great Investment
I purchased this tool primarily to remove about 250 square feet of thinset on concrete subfloor. Previously I had been using a battery operated version, also by Makita, which worked well enough but also used up 5 amp-Hr batteries in a few minutes. With this tool and a 5" diamond cup wheel it made the remaining area a breeze with my wife and myself trading off to save our joints. I used this with a dust extraction kit that I would highly recommend as well. I went with a 5" model found at home depot that fit fairly well. Even with that it will create an immense amount of dust when used for this application. I still prefer the battery operated version for smaller tasks, so unless you need sustained operation with high power draw, or you'd like the variable speed option, I'm not sure this is the tool for you. That said I would buy this 100 times out of 100 for DIY concrete grinding and thinset removal.

Variable speed grinder makes a world of difference
I was a bit hesitant to spend the extra money for the variable speed but I am glad I did. Grinding and cutting concrete block killed my older Makita grinder but this runs the wheels/blades at a nice easy speed with no seeming loss of power. Highly recommend.

Makita make quality tools
These variable speed grinders seem to last. Not sure about the replacement model but we have run 3 of these doing a lot of cutting with 4-6" thin cut off disks and flapper wheels with excellent results. One did die eventually but nothing lasts forever.

Soft start is really nice
I had an old cheap angle grinder that suddenly would only go full speed. I replaced it with this Makita. The soft start doesn't seem like a big deal but in practice there is no more sudden jerk everytime to touch the trigger. The variable speed is also very good, it holds speeds very steady while you vary the applied pressure, the speed is rock steady. The only niggle is the somewhat weird slide switch to turn it on, takes getting used to but works fine.

Great for finish work and blending edges of welds
Great for finish work and blending edges of welds. Quality Makita product that has served my needs in prep work before powder coat or paint.
