These require something for them to loop around and hang from. It doesn't necessarily have to be nails, it can be where 2 pieces of metal come together, but just something to hang them from. Each reflector rod has a thin elastic loop attached at one end so you can hang it. There is also a hole on the other end of the rod, so there are holes on each end of the rod so that if you want, you can attach multiple rods to each other. You don't have to use the elastic loop that comes attached to the rod to hang it. You can use a zip lock tie, which is what I've done, depending on where you are hanging it.I've hung some from very thin branches of a bush, where I used zip lock ties to make sure they were firmly attached to the super thin branch and wouldn't fly off in windy weather. would the multicolor scare hawks away?

In my opinion, from my experience, I don't think they scare anything away. I used the silver, shiny ones and the birds still ate about 1/3 of my peaches, or more. Don't why hawks would be different, but the hawks around where I live stick to the rabbits and the occasional cat.

I doubt it. The truth is that it really doesn't keep birds away very well.

If I replace the string with fishing line, would it help to hang them at varied lengths or is it better to hang them all the same?

Yes. We did that with our grapevines. Use fish line to vary heights and replace broken strings.

They hold for a year through all seasons

The product shininess work well in my orchard. I hang them from the tress with a shinny reflective strip in the ends. It keeps bird away from my trees and predators away from my chickens. It’s a pretty site sitting back and everything shimmer in the wind.
