The kind of show I want to play!!!!!!
Yeah . . . .I'm into the Gig Masters social network where clients look for talent online . . .I want to play jazz guitar and . . maybe . . .classical guitar for birthdays and corporate events . . .and this book is perfect to start out with . . . .All of the songs are tunes I'd like to play for Gig Masters and I wasn't sure about the classical guitar portion of my "show" until I checked this book out . . .Songs like Bouree, Cavatina, and even Fur Elise are great . . . I figure I'll purchase a classical cutaway acoustic-electric and pump something out of my amp with that . . . .I jam on a LTD ESP ec -256 . . .the ec1000 was cool . . . great abalonie design . . .but the 256 works well . . .I'm thinking an archtop might fit the bill . . .say an Ibanez . . .We shall see . . .Anyway . . .the jazz pieces in this book are great for the most important reason of all . . . .we get TABs !!! Yeah . . .I've been working with Omnibooks and lick books and found the TABs most useful . . . .You might need them in this book . . .we're talking about chord changes that include G#m7b5/A . . .that "slash A" is a killer and understanding these chord types requires more than knowledge of Tabs . . . .You have to know how to work your way between the #m7b5 and the A chord . . .good luck . . . aside from that . . .the book is lots of fun . . .From a guy who has gained most of his repitoir from the Real Book (and the New Real Book) stepping outside the box and learning from new material is a lot of fun . . . .I hope you enjoy this book and if you see anymore books by Lafleur . . . check them out . . . .the TABs will save you . . . .

I use this book for teaching students finger style guitar...
I teach online and face to face with this book and it's a great step up from other finger style books. It consists of walking base lines as well as chord melodies. Students particularly enjoy learning Mac the Knife! And others. Well worth the purchase.

Fun, challenging, guitaristic
Straight-ahead guitar instrumentals, acoustic and electric, for the cocktail gig, art museum fundraiser, high-brow after-party or whatever. These are a mix of jazz standards, classical pieces and a few overplayed pop hits that listeners who aren't really listening are bound to recognize and appreciate (if they're played well). If you're expecting all jazz, you may be a bit disappointed, but there's plenty here for the intermediate (and more advanced) guitarist to sink his or her teeth into. Just check out the song list before clicking "buy."

Diverse collection of excellent arrangements
I was surprised and pleased at the diversity of material in this book, with a range that includes a Bach cello piece, some standards like Misty, and some pop-rock classics like Yesterday and Time After Time. The book comprises 24 arrangements in all, with audio tracks available on-line.I play jazz guitar at a lower intermediate level, and I find the arrangements challenging but approachable, requiring considerable study and practice. The audio tracks help enormously to get a sense of the arrangements. More advanced players will of course have an easier time, but the arrangements are not watered down in any way whatsoever. The book is absolutely not for beginning jazz guitarists, let alone beginning guitarists.I found that most of the pieces are best played finger-style. They are generally adaptable to plectrum playing, but they do go much more smoothly finger-style (and you can hear this on the audio tracks). When played well the result is highly pleasing.I suppose the title "Cocktail Guitar" is meant to infer that this collection would provide a repertoire for playing in a cocktail lounge, and that seems quite correct. However the pieces are a wonderful supplement to any "mellow" jazz guitar repertoire.Highly recommended and one of the best books of its kind I've come across in quite some while.
