The overall best tool for dog’s problem nails
Repurchase after broke first one after over a year of heavy use. This is real help for our dog who has really serious nail & paw issues. This is a vital must have tool in caring for him. The vet said if he continues to have issues with his nails then we’ll need to have him tested for autoimmune disorders but to try to limit the impact of this by keeping his nails really short & well-groomed. We try to keep this under control by grooming his nails about 3 times a week.History : When we got him from a rescue last year his nails were super brittle & flaked apart so we had to start addressing this by taking him to the vet just a couple of days after we got him due to a nail that split vertically all the way to the skin. He was still scared due to the trauma of having just come into our home & then enduring a super loud thunderstorm the next night. Then the vet visit in which they had to restrain him & further have someone hold him to trim his nail. The vet thought maybe he just hadn’t had the right nutrition so we should start some supplements like fish oil & a vitamin right away & immediately start working on grooming his nails. Not the peaceful transition we had in but sometimes that’s life.Due to this we now have all the nail stuff- except for polish. We have two glass nail files- this one & a smoother one; two metal ones- a regular & a “diamond” one; a course gritty one I bought on Etsy; two nail grinders; & a variety of not used for purpose grinding toys & puzzles & such. We have an assortment of clippers too & topicals like jojoba oil & paw balms. The grinders are really the best for achieving rapid changes in the length, shape, & smoothness of the nail. However, sometimes they just aren’t what we need. He still gets tired of & uncooperative with using the grinder sometimes even with high value treats. There is no way one can fake that level of grinding on the other dogs so he feels it is unfair. Then there is the issue of space for things like storage & packing. The cord & multiple heads & all that just don’t fit as well in our daily dog care basket so they go in the grooming & bathing kit. Getting things of the bathing & grooming kit make the dogs less than happy. Also the grinder, the cord, & the multiple heads for it is just too much especially for a weekend trip or a few days. I’ll pack the grinder for longer trips because, but sometimes space matters. Also sometimes the sound & heat & overall experience of the grinder requiring him to stay really still in a less preferred position all feels a bit much to me too not just to our usually patient & cooperative dog. With the glass nail files it is easy for me & safe for him to let him choose the position he wants & then make adjustments so he can feel comfortable. Essential for maintaining that relationship of cooperative care. It’s also not where we started. We started with the smoother nail file because he was unaccustomed to grooming & very scared. That file is just a bit smaller so I could cover it with my finger & really worn on training him to slow touching nail & cooperative care. It’s also quieter & of course less abrasive to the nail. That’s all well & good but not truly effective at changing the nails & very time consuming. Then we advanced to this one. This excellent file is still small & reasonably quiet although there is a more noticeable grinding sound. Of course it is also quite a bit more effective & takes less time to change the length & shape of the nails. It also leaves the nail fairly smooth. It does heat up a bit & gets comfortable for his really sensitive nails as does any file or the grinder if I file too much. It’s not on the level of the grinder for making rapid change in the nails, but it does get the job done. I still follow up with the smaller one just because his nails still have an irregular texture in parts & are so prone splitting & but not to breaking anymore so there’s definitely progress. The other downside is that like all glass things it can break if dropped, but this one is thick enough that it doesn’t break easily. I dropped it several times on carpet & wood floors without issues, but when I dropped it off the counter onto the ceramic tile floor that was too much. It didn’t shatter into shards but broke into several large pieces so that was good. Of course the grinders may well have broken in the same circumstances.Notice the many tools I listed earlier that aren’t listed in the nail care routine. Still use the clippers from time to time but mostly now manage all three of my dogs’ nails just through grinding & filing.I don’t regret the round knob type file from Etsy. I use that about twice a month on one of my other dog’s nails to preserve the life of the glass files for my dog with the special nails. The metal files just don’t work for us & our specific situation & routine. The metal files seem to require more pressure & really holding the base of his sensitive nails so they don’t move or catch on the file. The metal files also don’t really seem to achieve a smooth finish on his flaky nails. There are always uneven spurs that tend to catch & split. I think the metal files probably would be fine for occasional use in a normal dog nail routine on normal nails.I should have given up after the second grinder toy puzzle thing was a flop, but sometimes we all just cling to false hopes longer than we should in futile efforts to make things easier. To wrap it up if I were absolutely limited to choosing just one single filing or grinding tool to use on my dog with the problematic nails it would be this glass nail. Its small. It’s quiet. It doesn’t require charging or other accessories. It’s comfortable for both my dog & me. It can be used safely in a variety of positions. It gets the nails smooth enough in most situations. It has outlasted two smoother smaller glass nail files. It worked effectively for a year of regular use on my dog with special nails & also my elderly dog who has developed a real dislike of the grinders. It didn’t break into shards when I sadly broke the first one after over a year of regular use.

Good enough to repurpose But no go for this dog
This will be totally depending on YOUR particular dog. For ours, it's not enough to get through his tough large & thick nails, and he's too nail-trim phobic. But it's a nice file & great for human toenails, so it's still going to be useful, just not for the intended purchase.

Just doesn't work that well
You really have to use it hard to work on stubborn dog nails and my dog hates it. Not worth it for bigger dogs and nails. Maybe for small dogs but we don't have a small dog. Can not recommend

Works great!
I have a 70 lb AmStaff with very thick nails that refuses a dremel and nail clippers. He’s a rescue so I’m not sure what happened but after a lot of work he will tolerate a file. Ive tried a bunch and work as quickly as possible while he can manage to keep it together but because his nails are so long it takes forever. This file works WAY BETTER than I could have hoped!!! Ten times better than the curved one with the handle. I’m still in disbelief!

Best file used.
This is the best file I have used. I have tried others, but they have not been as good as this one. My baby is happier because it files the nails downs faster and smooth than our other files. Will be purchasing again and again.

Nah
I don’t see what the hype is about at all. My dog absolutely hated this and frankly, I wasn’t a fan of the sound it makes when I would use it on my dog’s nails. Like nails on a chalkboard. So disappointing.

Did not work for us
It’s a very different texture. We could not get it to glide on nails at all. Ended up being useless. Should have returned it but I was too lazy.
