Excellent book, great writing.
Kathleen Collins is an excellent writer. Every one who likes to read short stories should read this collection of her work. It is just sad that her voice was silenced at such a young age. (She died of breast cancer at age 46 in 1988.) In the 60's, during the civil rights movement, many young people were expanding boundaries of friendship and love, the title story is about that time. The writing is so unique, like nothing I have read before. It is about people getting along as people, but it is more complex, because we can never be anything but what we are, be it black or be it white, or something else. We can however, ideally, get along with one another.

A wonderful collection of short fiction
Excellent short stories from a lost master, Kathleen Collins. I loved this highly original collection from start to finish, and every line made me want to read more. There's a depth to the characters, and an intimate quality to the prose, that engaged me from the get-go. I wish Collins had lived longer and we had more work than this relatively slender volume-- but what we have is wonderful enough.

I'm glad I read this.
This book was really well written. I liked the author's writing style. She repeated many lines throughout many stories which made it feel more impactful. Kind of like spoken-word or poetry. Lots of the stories had powerful things to say about race, racial identity, race relations, politics, and love (self-love and relationships). I'm so glad I got a chance to read this. I plan on seeing the movie she was involved in before her untimely death.

Real, Black-Life Stories
When a reader begins this collection of stories, there's tension everywhere - shoulders, neck, throat, stomach, behind the eyes, etc. With each story, the tension subsides until it's gone with only kinship and/or familiarity left in its wake. Black-life in America is always coupled with struggle of some sort for peace (external or internal) because of the color line. These stories capture the gamut comfortably. Nice!

My first reading of this genre
Very interesting short novellas. Surprising to me as I haven't read many stories like these, if any. Eye opening to me,glad for the experience. I recommend them highly.

So many explorations of love (in all its forms) and all that gets in ...
This book floored me. The variation in form, the direct, honest prose, the heart of it. So many explorations of love (in all its forms) and all that gets in the way (gender, race, wounds). Truly exceptional.

Read this book!
It's a wonderful book. New insight on how people viewed love, especially for the era it was written in. Powerful, and very human. The stories feel like they've been written by many different people, a testament to how she paid attention to other people and their lives.
