I bought this, but I can't get it to make any sound. What at u doing wrong?

Using the rosin cake that came with it, we also got no sound. After using a different rosin cake from another violin, it worked perfectly. Only after doing that did I see that the description here recommends rubbing it for 5 minutes. Maybe the included rosin needs that to get "primed"

How do I know what size to get my 5th grade student

Go with a 3/4 or 4/4. Your child's teacher should measure their arm length and be able to tell you exactly which would be the better fit.
