well made metal product. Starrett is a leader in measuring tools
Never lend tools to family and friends - you'll most likely never get them back - LOLI had a carpenter square for over 25 years - aside from slight rust on it, it was very functional. I lent it out but never got it back. This prompted to purchase a replacement. The starrett square is beautilly made of thick metal, markings are clear and easy to read. Hopefully, it too will last me for the next 25 years. They cost more but IMO, well worth the investment. I recommend it.

Very nice quality, but the marks are not visible enough
I wished they put some paint on the marks, so thy are more visible.

The best framing square on the market
When my old framing square (a cheap no-name I inherited from my first boss) went missing on a job site, I decided it was an excuse to seek out the nicest square I could find. I spent many hours (probably too many) scouring the internet and I must have looked at every framing square on the web (including antique ones). I settled on this gem. It's no-nonsense with just the 1/8th inch markings. It's dead square (I even checked it against a Starrett combo square). And it's steel, so if it ever gets knocked out of square you can fix it. It's slightly more expensive than the ones that the big box stores sell, but considering the difference in quality it's a steal. If you believe, as I do, that you can't do good work without good tools, this is the framing square for you.

Very out of Square
Nice looking and sturdy and heavily coated with either a lacquer finish or other clear coat. I knew the embossed measurement scale would be difficult to read under certain lighting conditions, so that was not a problem. However, the corner of the square was prominent and influenced the squareness of the tool. The coating was rough enough that a good fine straight line could not be drawn with it. In total, I've used Starrett tools for more years then I can remember and still own micrometers (inside and outside) and adjustable squares with rules over 24". I love Starrett, but I realize it's the low end of their tools and I suspected some out of square issues but not that bad. I wish I had an outside caliper to measure the hypotenuse accurately as I have no other reference to use. The 24" side thickness varied from 2.000 to 2.020 and the 16" side was from 1.504" to 1.514", these measurementrs were taken with a MITUTOYO 500-196-30. I will continue to buy Starrett tools in the future. I will just stick to the higher quality devices. For reference I used my Woodpecker 18X26 and WoodRaphfic square to check it with. My Wood pecker is out by .002 in 26" which is great for what I do. I was hoping for something compatible without the price tag of Woodpecker. Shipping was great and even though there was no packing around the square it came undamaged. Final note, I did or tomorrow morning will put it back in the mail. I think it's a valiant part on Starrett's side to try to produce a low priced tool which everyone is looking for but a little more accurate.

Starrett FS-24
Read some reviews and pics that showed numbers not being accurate not square ect. Mine came from known good seller and all is good as it should be, and clear coated. Wasn't expecting that. Thanks.
