Batch Distillation: Science and Practice

When I heard about this new book, I wondered if it could possibly add anything to my life. For about a year I dove head first into distilling education, using my spare time to learn on YouTube, through about 25 books, taking in a college short course and lab from a well-known expert and even attending the American Distillery Institute. Of all these, I thought the books may have been the most informative but least helpful - so technical and not practical.Well, Mr. Strickland’s book was impressive and fun. I’m not sure if I did it all over again if I would recommend doing it the way I did - for some relief in the learning process outside of thick books - or if I would have been more encouraged from the get-go starting here. Matt breaks down the terminology and answers some “secrets” I’ve been wondering about. It’s a great book for anyone in my position - putting together a business plan and about to submit TTB paperwork. I can only strongly recommend it as the best distilling book I’ve read because he hands out so much science and practice, as the title eludes, throughout styles, methods, equipment, and actually running it all together. This book was exactly what I was looking for as someone who wants to learn more about actual details for distilling. I wanted to know the science and the actual process of distilling and this book hit the spot when other books I read don't actually tell you anything. Worth the price. The only downside was the chemistry took some time for me to understand and I had to ask a friend who is knowledgeable to help me fully understand, but I would always prefer it being slightly too complicated than overly simplified.

Matt does a great job mixing sound technical discussion with an easy-to-read storytelling style. As a small distiller, I learned many specifics, especially in hard-to-research topics. He goes out of his way to explain there is NOT a SINGLE WAY. It's reassuring to have reinforced that "If the spirit is distilled with care and appreciation, then the drinker will know."
