What is the difference between the mc7 and mc1? i have an rcc7 unit that i purchased 2 years ago

Hi Gregory, the the difference between the two membranes is the gallons per day produced; the MC1 will fill the ro storage tank a just a couple minutes quicker than the MC7. Either membrane is compatible with the RCC7.

When should this be changed?

It should last 2 to 3 years. However, I use a TDS meter to monitor pollutant levels. The water in Alpine, TX is not very good according to the TDS readings. I change my RO membrane twice a year and the other filters about every 3 months. I am probably a bit of a fanatic though. Check out 123filter.com for filter information. I stopped buying from Amazon because I got a better price and their customer service is awesome. Amazon customer service is excellent but 123filter is in the RO business. Very helpful for problem solving.

Are there any specific instructions? Do you have to run water through it awhile before using?

There will be specific instructions but in any case it is always a good idea to flush the system few a few minutes before using. The important thing is to keep the membrane wet. Tech support at isptings is awesome too.
