TP-Link TL-SX1008, 8 Port 10G/Multi-Gig Unmanaged Ethernet Switch

Hooked it up, and got 5 gig up and down with the leds showing proper speed. Fan is noisy, but unit is good. I put my networking equipment in a closet so I do not hear the fan but it would be annoying to be next to it all the time. The fan noise is more of a whine in a pitch that is not loud but annoying. Shame they dont correct this really since the unit is basically good and inexpensive. The fan is only about an inch to two in diameter located at the end of the unit. Its not a deal breaker by any means. So the fan is annoying because of the whine, but its not the fan itself that is defective its the fact the fan exhaust is behind a restriction. So the way the cover of the unit is designed it has a very small area for the fan to vent out of. That grate or restriction in front of the fan causes the whine, take that out and the fan goes from a whine to a fan noise which is much less annoying. While still not being silent it is much more bearable and as a side benefit the unit vents much better and stays cooler, which may add to the life of the switch. It takes a few minutes to do with good snips but be careful about the wires on the lower left of the fan itself. I did not take off the housing I snipped it with it on. If you have trouble visualizing this and my pictures are not the greatest go the guy who wired in a fan and see what I am talking about. I did not want to buy another fan or take the unit cover off but this seems to me to be a win. Try of course at your own risk and probably does void the warranty, although I would argue that the unit works better like this and the unit was not opened. Just careful to not allow the fan blades to get jammed by something being put into the fan since it is now unprotected.

10/23/2024 : (If you choose to replace the fan, you do it at your own risk, and I take no responsibility for the outcome.) I pulled the trigger and installed the Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX 12v 0.05A, and now the unit runs SUPER QUIET. I cannot hear it at all from 10 feet away, and up close it just sounds like a soft hum, quite pleasant, as is the nature of noctua. Since I got this switch on a pretty good deal, I did not want to return it, so I decided to just use a razor to carefully cut the soft rubber on the plug of the original fan's wire, after which it easily came off. Use a small flat screwdriver, or tweezer, to "unclip" the security tab (on the 3-pin header) before pulling the plug, otherwise the entire head will come off. It is easy to unscrew the two screws of the old fan. To install the noctua i just used the larger washer, and i don't think you need even that tbh (or u can just use the screws that come with the noctua fan for the quickest, easiest installation). Now, it runs super quiet with smooth airflow, and should last even longer than with the original fan. I will update if the unit fails, if not, assume it is still running solid. I decided to share because of all the other times when generous people voided their own warranties in order to help the community out. So, I can confirm the noctua fan works, and is very, very, very very quiet. If you choose to replace it, you do it at your own risk, and I take no responsibility for the outcome. 10/22/2024 : I spent a lot of time trying to make this work, because other than the fan it is an excellent unit (talk about weak link in the chain!!). I definitely did NOT open this up, and did NOT peak inside, but from other videos/pics on the internet I found that it has 1 small fan that is plugged into a 3-pin header, so technically it *should* be very easy to switch with a Noctua NF-A4x20 FLX 12v 0.05A. Except, TP-Link in their infinite wisdom, apparently, have also layered some wax/silicon type goo on the 3-pin plug, pretty much ensuring that you void the warranty if you try to switch out the fan. I am so disappointed, given how sensible their other products seem to be made. Why put a server-grade fan in a consumer-grade product? And then make it impossible for the consumer to upgrade the fan to a normal one? Very disappointed. I am seriously debating whether to return and wait for a quiet model in 1-2-3 years, or to just risk the warranty and replace with a noctua. Original: Reading other reviews, I thought it would make a moderate hum, not notable from 15-20 feet away. Nope. The fan is high pitched, the type of cpu fans from 20 year ago (remember those?). This had a good sale on the big sale day so I was eager to get it. Sadly as soon as I plugged it in I knew it was too noisy. It whines for about a minute, then stops, making you think maybe it was just startup noise. But, even with NO load, AND in front of TWO high end fans, the internal fan kicked on and stayed on. Wow. I am so shocked, at this price, these fans are ridiculous!!!! Can only be used in a server room, away from humans. Very unpleasant sound. I have some big NAS hard drives that churn in my living room, and those sound like gentle chugs compared to this. Anyway, I went with the 5-port passive version that was also on sale — that one is working solidly and with my fans should remain within decent temps. I have added a video, excuse the mess, but it actually sounds much louder in real life. The sound it makes up close in the video is what it sounds like from 15 feet away in a quiet room. I unplugged it at the end of the video which is why it stopped. Do not get this 8-port if your have a quiet room or plan to watch movie or sleep or live around it. I honestly expected more from tp-link, I am shocked …

I picked up the 8 port one. This is a huge switch, we are talking industrial grade equipment. The pictures on Amazon don't make it justice, and I was in shock when I saw the size of this thing. It seems to be very heavy duty and this is the kind thing companies install in companies server racks and the such. The connection is top-notch, I'm getting the best speeds I have ever tested on my 2.5gb Fiber connection with it. Connection to my NAS seems to be great now as well. Also, it doesn't run hot at all. My smaller 2.5gb switch ran way warmer than this. Now the bad: It's very big, like I said, so this is not something you may place on top of your desk in a little spot. Make sure you have ample space, it's the size of a small computer. It's noisy. Not crazy noisy, but I'm already looking for another spot for it where it is not too close to me, as I can hear it a little bit more than I would like. If something changes after I use it for a while, I'll make sure to update this review. Update: At the end of the day, I opted for returning the 8 Port version and purchased the 5 port 10gb fanless version. The 8 port 10gb was too noisy for my taste, even after hiding it behind the desk and far away from my ears. The 5 port 10gb version is perfect, haven't noticed any issues so far, and it doesn't run so hot as other reviewers have said. My original review above still stands for both versions. If you don't mind the noise, the 8port one is an amazing switch and best in its class.

I've been trying to keep up with the ever-increasing cable modem speeds available in 2024. My current combination of NETGEAR CM2000 and Orbi RBRE960 has pushed me right up to the 2.5Gbps max speed for my old multi-gigabit Ethernet switches. It was time to get ahead of the curve, and that meant 10Gbps Ethernet (10GbE). After looking at all the expensive and/or mediocre reviews of other 10GbE switches, and having reasonably good luck with a trio of TP-Link Wi-Fi repeaters, I decided to try the "big bruiser" TP-Link TL-SX1008 8-Port 10G Ethernet switch. While I prefer managed switches, this unmanaged switch hit the right price/performance point for my needs. After running all kinds of throughput tests, I can confidently state that this switch can forward multiple 10Gbps streams without blocking. I haven't tested it's documented 80Gbps forwarding rate, but for all my needs, both intranet and Internet, this thing is pretty transparent. My only complaint is that the active fan is a bit noisy. Sitting on my desk, about 4 feet from my left ear, there's a constant "whooshing" sound, like a CPU fan running at high speed, or an old-time 7200 RPM hard drive (remember them?) running in the background. It's not deafening, or even distracting; just not what I expected, since all my other comm equipment runs silently, using passive cooling. If you don't mind a little white noise, or mount it a few feet away from your workspace, I highly recommend the TL-SX1008 10GbE Ethernet switch.

This is a basic, no frills switch with 8 ports that will auto-configure to 100, 1000, 2.5G, 5G, or 10G. LED's above each connector socket let you know what the speed is. They're not blindingly bright, in fact, I'd call them a bit dim. They show link speed, but don't blink on port activity. There's no way to know if there is any port activity. No GUI - no management. Just plug in the power, plug in your devices, and get networking. Can't be much easier. If you need fancy configuration options then this switch isn't for you. When I first powered it on, I thought a jet plane was going to take off. The fans are very loud on initial power up. The switch does take quite a bit of time to boot - definitely not "instant on". Once the power-on cycle was complete, the fans did quiet down, although the speed does vary a bit even when on low speed. They make a bit of a howling noise (like wind) that wavers in frequency; this switch is next to my desk and the sound is a bit annoying - not loud, but the variation keeps you hearing it. If this switch were farther away, I probably wouldn't even hear it. I like that all ports work at all speeds. I'm using some 2.5G and some 10G devices and everything seems to be working as expected. PROS: Easy to set up, can't be simpler 8 ports that all can work at any speed: 100, 1000, 2.5G, 5G, or 10G Rack mountable (you have to install the ears) CONS: Fans a bit annoying with varying howling sound (not loud, just varying) No GUI, no configuration LED lights over network ports are a bit dim, but at least they're not blinding No lights to indicate activity - just link speed If you need a switch to interconnect different speed devices, this one will do the trick. Other competitors may only have a couple of 10G ports, or they might support 1000 and 10G, but not 2.5G or 5G. I've been using TP-Link switches for years in my home lab and they offer a good selection of products and they always perform as expected. You're not paying a high price just for a fancy brand label or advertising.

Wow! I had no idea that it made a difference which Ethernet switch you buy, but after using this one I am amazed! I recently upgraded our home internet to 5 gig fiber optic. With the provider’s equipment we were not able to get the service we were paying for. So I upgraded the router and added satellites to create a mesh system. In the media cabinet I installed this Ethernet switch to connect all the hardwired drops around my home. It made a huge difference! We are getting high-speed internet everywhere now. I am not an IT person by any means, but I was able to instantly replace my old switch with this one and upgrade our whole home internet in the blink of an eye. It was easy to set up and everyone is happy. I did think it was a little pricey, but honestly I don’t even care now because I can see that it has made a big difference over the cheaper one I use to have.

Does what it should, but that fan is so loud. Do yourself a favor and spend the extra $15 on a noctua 40mm x 20mm 12v 3 pin fan at the same time. It's a 5 min swap and will make your life a lot better, because that fan is constantly on.

One of the biggest known issues with this unit is the cooling fan running at high speed and creating a lot of noise for some environments. I personally have not had any problems with the fan speed ramping up with an ambient temperatures ~22°C with other network equipment both under and over this unit. All Cat6 cables less than 53m length with 10gBe network adapters immediately auto negotiated at those speeds. One cable that exceeded the 53 m cut off was upgraded and immediately negotiated at 10gBe.

Switch is good and working solid. I have worked with 2.5 gbps and 10gbps at same time in different ports. It’s easy to use and setup. I am using it my home-lab.
