I have brown skin. Will it leave a white ashy look?

Yes, this is a Zinc Oxide sun tan lotion. That means it intentionally is not meant to absorb into the skin like other chemical sun screens, but instead is meant to form a physical barrier on the top layer of skin. Adults tend to get the one that absorbs since it looks better, kids typically (or adults who worry about chemicals) tend to get this type since while its the stereo typical white face, thats what it was designed for. Depending on SPF level and quality of the product some certainly are better or worse than others.

Would this be appropriate for daily moisturizer underneath make up? Would it be too thick/greasy?

It's too thick and leaves a white residue. I like the tint EltaMD for under make up that one is wonderful leaves your skin soft and covers up small imperfections so it can worn alone or under make up. Hope that helps

Why does this have so many chemicals in “inactive ingredients“?

I have a severe allergic reaction to sunscreen ingredients and this is the ONLY one I can use without any reaction at all. Those chemicals must not be harmful.
