high quality; printer works like new
This isn't a cheap part to replace. But, I tried an after market drum that arrived damaged. This drum was package dwell and its surface was perfect like you'd expect. Replacing this drum allowed me to get a used 8 year old printer working like new. Of course, it's almost half the price of a new equivalent printer. But, I'd guess it will last me 10 years if I use OEM ink since I don't print often.

I needed to replace drum... sticking with the high quality Brother brand
I should have been taking pictures while I did this, and didn't think of it in time. The drum itself is great. My previous one lasted much longer than projected, and, of course, I did a new toner cartridge at the same time. I am always very careful when making changes to electronics-- don't want to do anything wrong or mix up something. So, although the actual replacement of the drum is not difficult at all, the instructions that come in the box from Brother are just diagrams with arrows, and the diagram itself is so dark you can't really tell what's what. Even a few words about resetting the counter (not there at all), and moving the tab at the back back & forth and the re-locking it, would have been most helpful. I ended up going to YouTube, and eventually found my specific model. I love my Brother Printer--it has held up well for five years already and now I anticipate it will continue to do so with new cartridge & toner-- but the 3 rating is just because I had to waste so much time being sure I could find out how to do it correctly, when just a few specific words would have been so helpful. I couldn't even locate a video of instructions on the Brother website-- reviews from others and a little more searching eventually got me there. Thanks

Unfair Reviews
I was reading down the reviews, and several of the top reviews are unfair. I've been using Brother printers for many years. Several hundred printers of a dozen or more models. One at every desktop. My people print a lot. I tried using 3rd party toners and drums. After going through many knockoffs, some of which I thought were top notch, we went back to the Brother brand. I know they're probably made in the same factory as some of the knockoffs, but we were having a lot of quality issues. Now when a user complains, I can argue that I'm using the manufacturer brand so it has to be the best available. If I had my way, I'd make everyone print on the ginormous departmental copiers. But then they'd have to walk 20 or 30 steps to get their printouts. Jesus Christ on a bicycle, you never heard so much complaining. I'd be doing them a favor by making them exercise a little bit. I digress. There are going to bad toners and drums occasionally. Send them back for replacement. If it didn't fit, there's probably something else going on. I'll leave it at that.Get a spare toner and drum, and keep it on hand. When you need one, you don't have time even for Amazon Prime.Learn how to do the toner and drum reset. It happens a lot that when I install a new whatever, the printer doesn't register that it's new. A reset almost always takes care of that.

Use original manufacturer parts!
NEVER ise third party printer consumables! Cheaper but they generated error messages I could never get rid of! Now I use strictly original manufacturer (Bother) parts. No problems!

Makes a noticeable difference in print quality
I ordered this replacement as soon as my Drum Light came on, but did not install it until the printer began to make screeching noises when printing. It was super easy to install - I do recommend that you look at all the pictures before you begin, in order to understand all the steps.I was very surprised and pleased to see the difference it made in print quality. Highly recommend.
