Great River Milling Organic Hulled Barley, Whole Grain, 25 lb

Love this brand! Milling our own flour has been an adventure but worth every second. The fresh baked breads are outstanding.

So far I've used it for roasted barley tea, milled into flour for beads n cakes, added whole to soups n stews or boiled like oatmeal and also made a delicious milk based porridge - it's all good.

Great product & fast shipping

Not much to say here. The barley is as advertised. The shipping was slower than I expected, especially since the state of origin isn't all that far from my home, but the price was better than I could find anywhere else. This is hulled barley, which has the bran intact, unlike pearl barley. It takes longer to cook, but it also keeps better and that is what I want in a grain. Also, of course, having the bran intact means having the bran to eat, which is more fiber in our diets. I have cooked this whole in a stew, and it was the same as pearl barley in appearance. I cracked it in a Corona mill and it then cooked up like rice in a soup. When we poured it into the storage bucket, the grain appeared clean. There was no dirt or foreign plant material.

I am so excited. Could not find whole, unmucked-around-with barley anywhere local that wasn't meant for livestock. Bag arrived well boxed so it stayed clean and intact. Easy to open bag. Did not have to argue with the little string. I have some in the rice cooker now. Keep in mind product is sold by weight. However, I wonder if a smaller bag can be found for packaging. I love that the bag can be recycled or used to keep down weeds in garden.

Thought I would be getting hulled barely - this could more accurately be called cracked barley with many fragments in the mix - not nearly the quality that I can get at my local health food co-op. When cooked, all the fragments mean you get barley mush with a few larger bits. If you are just looking to make porridge it might be acceptable, otherwise avoid.

Great product. 25 pounds is a lot. Good protein source.

I eat barley every day after cooking one cup of this whole grain in my InstaPot. Barley helps lower my cholesterol. The price, unfortunately, continues to rise each year that I buy it. This is quality barley & it comes in a sturdy bag. I pour the 25 lb bag into a large Rubbermaid plastic box which seals securely. Will buy again.
