Project Apollo: The Early Years, 1960–1967 (America in Space Series, 3)

Pretty Good!
In Project Apollo: The Early Years (1961-1967), Eugen Riechl recounts the beginnings of America’s quest for a lunar landing. After lagging behind Russia for months, and spurred on by the Kremlin’s launch of Sputnik, President John F. Kennedy vowed that the United States would send men to the moon by the end of the decade. America began to marshal her resources to achieve this lofty goal. Riechl traces the journey from the formation of NASA to the investigation into the tragedy of Apollo 1, where three astronauts, Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee lost their lives. Project Apollo is a compact volume that contains much detailed information, including full-color photographs and diagrams and progresses of each phase of the program. Its magazine-style structure is extremely helpful in digesting the technical details. One does not have to be an engineer to appreciate the problem-solving ability of those dedicated to this ambitious mission. Anyone who is interested in the space program will love this book. Project Apollo is a testament to America’s ingenuity and can-do attitude, and to the people of NASA who won the race.I was given a free copy from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

The book described the many problems and decisions that had to be made about this "never been done befor" venture. As an engineer on the Apollo and Saturn II programs it accurately described the unknowns and questions that had to be decided with little factual information. It also described the time, cost, weight, and safety ballance decisions that were made with success. Brings back old memories.

Early Apollo Saturn program
Words missing on some pages. Several areas repeat items that have ready been stated. An Atlas Agena missile is labeled as SA-1. A fair account of the early Apollo Saturn project.

This volume shows the early missions leading up to the manned missions. However there are some small editing errors.

Gives information on the early years of the project.
A smaller book but has lots of labeled diagrams but ends before the moon flight. gives detail on how the final configuration of the moon lander was arrived at.

could have been better!
Interesting subject, learned quite a lot about the history. Only complaint why does it stop at 1967 and who the heck selected the colour for the page numbering, way too light when reading in the evening (yes lights are on).
