It was time to replace my first Cole and Mason Pepper grinder I bought over 5 years ago. It was starting to skip while grinding. I looked at it. My husband took it apart. It didn't help. I groaned when I realized I was going to have to buy a new one. My search started about 6 months ago. I wanted the same Cole and Mason pepper grinder. The problem was there were many of the model I had around. I was having a kitchen tool party and decided to purchase a different brand through the party. It was expensive. It lasted less than 6 months before it stopped grinding. This is how I remember grinders. Breaking very easily. I ordered a different model of Cole and Mason grinders next. The problem was though it was adjustable, it was only adjustable by turning the top knob. It didn't really change the grind much. The insides were also small. I returned it. I didn't want to spend a ton of money on a grinder but then saw this one. It looked like what I wanted. This has the plastic barrel where the pepper/salt are kept. It is adjustable by turning the dial close to the bottom of the grinder. I decided to give it a try. This is just what I was looking for. The barrels hold enough salt or pepper that I am not constantly filling it. I can see inside so I know exactly how much is in each of them. They are beautiful. Something I like to put on the table. I can adjust the grind by using the dial near the bottom of the grinder instead of the knob on top. The pepper grinder: It comes set at 3. This is a perfect grind for me. It is easy to turn. I do find that when I try to grind very fine on 1 or 2, the turning is stiff and more difficult. Take the setting all the way to the max and the grind is coarse. The salt shaker: I have this set at 3 also. This is a fine grind. I think a little finer than table salt. Anything below that is more like a powder.

Received these beauties well packaged in a fitting box given their retail cost. The packaging suggests that these are high quality devices built for a long life, this claim is supported by the outstanding level of warranty provided on the grinding mechanism. In use, they are easy to hold and operate, both offering differing sizes of grind to accommodate different tasks. Closure of the top/fill section is positive, and I don't feel that picking them up by the top will cause an issue unless one is extremely rough with them for some unknown reason. The only potential sticking point is the price, as there are cheaper options available for the same basic purpose. For my own decision making, the cost was offset by Cole & Mason's noteworthy reliability, quality construction, timeless contemporary design, and the feeling that I will be using these for a very long time to come. I would recommend these over the cheaper alternatives, this is a purchase where I feel the cost is relatively well justified based on the quality of the product and the likelihood that them breaking or otherwise becoming unusable is very slim in my opinion.

I’m a guy. I typically don’t goo-goo over kitchen gadgets. I am totally ok using cheap plastic costco grinders, but when I realized they were depositing bits of plastic into our food, the line was drawn. Firmly. I remembered that I loved my Cole & Mason mortar and pestle that I got a number of years back as a gift, and started searching online for grinders, only to find these bad boys. While pricey, for a salt and pepper grinder, I figured what the hell, let’s give them a try and see if they live up to the mortar and pestle. When they arrived, I was blown away. “Ugh. These are amazing.” I exclaimed! I never realized grinders could be so well packed. They had their own display box for f*** sake, hell, the box was built better than some of the tools I have in the garage. The grinders themselves, are extremely well made. Tight and smooth. Grinding salt or pepper no longer requires effort, it’s just buttery smooth perfection with every twist. The best part? You can adjust the size of the salt and pepper grinds, because why not? I’ve noticed that my pinky finger automatically raises when I grind salt onto my food. I doubt that this was intentional on Cole & Mason’s part, but they are English, so who knows? The top is a bit tight when you’re trying to refill them, but after brute forcing it the first time and spilling salt crystals all over the kitchen, I realized a bit of finesse doesn’t hurt. Overall, these are a great set of grinders. Smooth and sexy as can be. Don’t go another day without experiencing the power of the Cole & Mason salt and pepper grinders.

This salt and pepper grinder is top of the line! It's stylish, functional, easy to use and well worth the money. Very easy to use, grinds Peppercorns effortlessly, has a large capacity. I do particularly love the look of it, to be honest, and would have been willing to pay more.

I was originally going to get just the pepper mill based on the recommendation of America's Test Kitchen, but when I saw this set for not a lot more I sprung for it. The packaging is beautiful. It comes in a nice hinged presentation box that elegantly displays both mills. It would make a great wedding gift with this presentation. The pepper mill works wonderfully. It is effortless to grind pepper on any of the settings, and it produces a lot more per twist (especially on the fine setting) than my previous pepper mill. The grind settings are clearly marked at the bottom. The stainless top and bottom look great, but they show fingerprints very easily. Refilling the pepper mill is also difficult, as you have to pull pretty hard on the top to get it to come off, and when it does finally pop off you end up invariably scattering any remaining peppercorns all across the room. I would've much preferred a top that screwed off gently to avoid making a mess (I've taken to refilling it outside). It does warn you not to grind salt in the pepper grinder because the salt will cause the stainless steel mechanism to rust. The salt mill isn't quite as good as the pepper mill. It uses a ceramic grinding mechanism to avoid corrosion, but they warn you that putting pepper into the salt mill can chip the ceramic. The salt mill is just as easy to grind as the pepper mill, but it has fewer grinding settings. Unfortunately, even on the finest setting, the salt that comes out is still pretty coarse and you end up with crunchy salt pieces in your food. It still pairs attractively with the pepper grinder on the table, but I usually just end up using the table salt in a shaker instead.

Fabulous grinders! Wish I'd been familiar with Cole & Mason long ago. Adding salt and pepper to food requires fewer turns and the grind choices ought to satisfy any user. This set replaced a pepper grinder we had for many years and I have every expectation Cole & Mason will live up to reviews.

Quality product. My last set, I did not realize there were plastic parts in the grinding mechanism, so after about 5 years, plastic started to come out with the salt (probably with the pepper too, but it's black, so didn't notice). This time, I researched a set that would stand the test of time. No plastic parts = yeah! When griding, you can feel the craftsmanship as it takes little effort to grind salt and pepper. Adjusting is easy, and they are beautiful to boot. I also really like the glass, so you know when you're getting low. Not the cheapest, but I plan to have these for the rest of my life (after going through 3 sets over the years), and they are worth every penny!

Having never spent more than £20 on these things, I broke out into a cold sweat when my better half suggested these. Once I had calmed down, I had the light bulb moment, the reason for needing new ones was my previous approach meant they never lasted. Anyway a few weeks in and these are without doubt the best mills we've ever had, solid build, consistent grind, no mess and they look great. Spend the extra, they are worth it.

I own another style of grinder by this brand, and since my other cheaper grinders just broke, I went looking for something by Cole and Mason. Their grinders are the best quality. They are easy to fill and easy to operate, and their mechanisms are very durable. I know these are expensive and that is why I hesitated for a few days before purchasing, but after reading countless reviews and comparison shopping on other sites I went with these. There only ever seemed to be cheap quality or high quality, nothing in the middle, and I decided instead of replacing cheaper ones every few years, I would just buy the good ones. My other set has lasted about 6 years so far without a hint of concern, whereas I’ve replaced the cheaters sets twice already. I believe these will last a lifetime. And they are pretty :)
