Outstanding!
I don’t normally write reviews on anything, but I actually enjoyed reading the book. It is my favorite book detailing homemade firearms construction. I own and have read almost all of Bill Holmes’s books. I like those too, but I found this one to be more clear. I think the average person can make the gun if he is willing to work hard, put in the time, and follow the dimensions as closely as possible. The only problem I see, which might not be a problem to some, is the availability of steel collars in the size he desrcribes. Or set screw collars, I should say. You need to get set screw collars with an outside dimension of 1 3/8 inches, and an I.D. of 3/4 inches. Good luck with that! You could make them if you really wanted to, even without a lathe. Get some steel bar stock from a metal supply company with an outside diameter of 1 3/8 inches. Then cut pieces to the length he says, then drill a hole 3/4 inches in the center. You can put a 0.75 inch drill bit in your 0.5 inch capacity drill press if you get a bit with a 0.5 inch shank. At least I think you can. Then drill and tap another hole on the side for a set screw. I don’t recommend making one, since you would go to prison if you get caught. I have seen some of these made in Australia, among other places. You can make a perfect working machine gun if you take your time and follow the dimensions he outlines. You don’t need a lathe or mill, but it would make things easier, faster, and yield better results. Even for the minimum amount of tools required it may cost you a few hundred to several hundred dollars. You pretty much have to have a drill press. Then you need a bench grinder, an angle grinder, a hacksaw, good files, the appropriate size drill bits, a vise, a bench to mount everything on, and the materials. That includes tubing, washers, and other things. The instructions are clear though. But it makes me mad that the sellers want someone to pay over $1,200 for this book! Ridiculous! You might be able to find a copy of it on the website thehomegunsmith.com. Just print it out, and then you don’t have to pay squat. They are charging a ton of money for the book just because Paladin is no longer publishing it! Is anyone buying it? Probably not. I hope the book helps you in some way or another if you get your hands on one. Stay safe people, and have an outstanding day!

With a few mods could easily be a legal gun
With certain exceptions a firearm may be made by a non-licensee provided it is not for sale and the maker is not prohibited from possessing firearms. However, a person is prohibited from assembling a non-sporting semi-automatic rifle or non-sporting shotgun from imported parts. In addition, the making of an NFA firearm requires a tax payment and approval by ATF. An application to make a machine gun will not be approved unless documentation is submitted showing that the firearm is being made for a Federal or State agency.[18 U.S.C. 922(o) and (r), 26 U.S.C. 5822, 27 CFR 478.39, 479.62 and 479.105]So it is NOT ILLEGAL for someone to make the gun in this or any other book as long as it is built as a sporting semi-auto weapon. Making it a full auto weapon would be illegal not as a semi-auto. So making a few mods to this gun to qualify as a sporting gun would be easy enough for anyone with a brain so DON"T listen to people saying building your own gun is illegal check the ATF website yourselves

For everyone who thinks banning guns is possible.
This is the reductio ad absurdum for everyone who thinks you can actually ban guns. More specifically it shows in great detail how to make a crude but very functional 9mm sub machine gun out of steel tubing and common springs. using nothing but simple hand tools. No welding, no lathe, no milling machine. You don't even need an electric drill. This isn't a theoretical exercise. Luty has done it and got in trouble with the English police when he showed it off. It is a cookbook, complete with templates and very complete instructions. If you wanted to do it -- and don't mind spending some time in jail, as Luty did -- you can easily fabricate your very own submachine gun.It is, of course, highly illegal, in England, the United States and most other countries. I'm also skeptical of the safety and reliability of the design. But if you follow the instructions carefully you should get at least a couple of magazines worth of shooting out of the result. As a practical matter, the main value of this book is demonstrating just how easy it is to make a modern gun. Nor is the point merely theoretical. There is a booming garage industry in making guns like this in Chechnya, Nigeria and other places. It would be a lot easier to do it in the United States.

Expedient Homemade Firearms: The 9mm Submachine Gun
Very impressive, I don't believe Mr. Luty is a threat to the public, but judging from what the British government has had to say about him, he is still a threat, I would say a mortal threat, to the status quo, vis-a-vis British gun laws. I have read Bill Holmes. I have read Metral. Luty's book is the only one that I came away from with the impression that I might actually be able to build the gun the author showed how to make, no machine tools required. The lack of a rifled barrel makes that possible. The instructions did require a thorough reading and re-reading, in my case, before I really "got it", but aside from a few minor spelling and grammatical errors, they were very clear, step-by-step, and concise, while of sufficient detail to properly demonstrate the concepts involved. The author provides cutting templates, and all the needed specifications for the the necessary materials. Highly recommended for anyone interested in the subject of improvised firearms.I will not be building this firearm, nor would I advocate that to anyone else. The BATF has no more sense of humor than the British constabulary on this subject. But I think such books are vitally important because they make it clear to politicians that such things are possible and keep them all just that little bit fearful of what the general populace might do if they ever go too far. I think a little bit of that sort of fear in the back of the minds of those in power is a healthy thing for a free society interested in remaining free. So long as it is there, the instructions in Mr. Luty's book will probably not need to be followed.
