Is the crate solid wood?

Yes it is crafted from 100% New Zealand Pine, the same wood used for the blocks.

How heavy are the blocks all together? I am looking for a lightweight, but large jenga so no kids get hurt or maimed by the toppling tower.

The blocks are 20lb total together. The crate weighs 5lb. So each block is approximately 5.3oz. It is meant to be a very family friendly size!

Can I paint the blocks what do I need to do before and after I paint

You can totally paint the blocks! But what is your process for painting? Spray, brush, roll? The last two will leave brush/ roll marks and that will create drag while the game is in play, meaning easier to tip over the tower. And with spray watch out for runs and drips that could get in the way of the game. And will need to sand in between coats as well. If anything, maybe just a linseed oil or a compatible product to seal the natural wood. Hope this helps.
