The directions on the item are difficult to figure out how do you get codes for each remote that you were testing?

There are not any codes, all this tool does is tell you the frequency of the button you press. THEN you need to be able to generate that tone (if you will) from another device. Let's say that 35 is the pause button for your TV...you then can use ANY remote controller that has a button that reads 35. Or you may be able to create a device that can emit that same signal (I call them tones). I would like to bust TV commercials by pressing the button on a one button (custom) device....All it does is mute the sound during commercials. Press it again and the sound comes back on. Hope this helps.

will this work with air conditioner remote controls?

I do not know which infrared remotes it will not work with, but it worked with all of mine, including my home security system.
