Modkat Top-Entry Cat Litter Box, Leak-Proof, Liner & Scoop, White

I absolutely love this top-entry litter box! It has made such a difference in keeping litter contained and reducing the mess around the box. My cat adjusted to it quickly, and I love that it helps keep curious pets and little hands out as well. It's easy to clean, sturdy, and looks much nicer than a traditional litter box. If you're looking for a litter box that helps control litter tracking while still being functional, I definitely recommend this one!

When we moved, we bought new litter boxes. We have three. In the Nuthaus, they were in the bathroom, our bedroom, and the unused fireplace (with half a curtain hanging in front of it for privacy and looks). Fortunately, here at Vogelfutter we have been able to move two of them to the bathrooms (one in a closet) and one in the laundry room. Let me explain what my life looked like during the past few months at the Nuthaus: We had three covered/lidded litter boxes, with swinging doors for the cats' entries. One of our cats thought she had a UTI, and thus behaved as though she did (this is a thing cats can do; like, she was diagnosed with what's basically hypochondria, but cats can actually make themselves really sick, and she was even bleeding a little bit, but there was no physical reason). She was visiting the litter boxes 30+ times per day, often in rapid succession, one after another. When I woke up, I'd have to sweep the bathroom floor before I could use the restroom, because Mal would want to crawl around and there was litter everywhere. Much of the time when I was... doing my business... I'd have to be REALLY exaggerated in making faces and saying, "Ewww! Don't put your hand in there! It's DIRTY! That's where the cats poop! YUCK!" Unfortunately, this typically backfired, as Mal thought it was hysterical and would reach inside, anyway. We'd go into Mal's room, and there would be cat litter on the crib mattress, as that's a favorite resting spot for the kittehs. So I'd swipe that off and have to sweep his floor, too. Later, when Mal bored with playing in his room after diaper change, he'd crawl back to our room to make sure his dad got up in time for work. I'd have to run in there and sweep our room so he wouldn't track through the litter. Then, during the day, I'd sweep the whole house at least once, and the areas around the litter boxes two or three additional times. And I'd vacuum. There was litter on the mantel, the coffee table, the bookshelves, and window sills. It felt like a constant battle, and I was exhausted. I hated the cats. I wanted them to disappear. Then there was that Mal liked to pull up on the litter boxes, and they were filthy. They all had filters in the top, to keep the smell from getting out, but that meant that there were lots of nooks and crannies where dust and old litter and cat hair could collect. We cleaned them regularly, but they always looked dusty and were dirty. Also, Mal sometimes decided that banging on the top wasn't enough, and he'd reach in, like that punch game on "The Price is Right." I don't think he ever retrieved a treasure, but it was just a battle to try to keep his hands out of that stuff! (I guess it looks a lot like a sand box with which he *could* play, now that I ponder it.) So. Before we moved, we looked at the Modkat Litter Box. You can see all of the features on the website, so I won't do a repeat here. Also, you might notice that right now the boxes are on sale for the low low price of $171! Now, when we bought them, they were the full $180. No, we're not suckers. Yes, we asked ourselves, "Is anything worth spending almost $600 on litter management?" Then James asked me something, and in the throes of dealing with this, I did not hesitate with an affirmative answer: "Over the next two years, will it be worth it not to have to fight Mal?" And we went for it. We've been here just over a month. What do I think? First, let me tell you what we did: 1) We didn't get black. The black boxes look so sleek, but one of the reviews I read said that even "dust-free" cat litter left dust on the plastic, making it look dirty. I got one red, figuring that if it looked janky, I could move it into the laundry room. Actually, you can see a thin film of dust on it, but it's not too noticeable, and I like how it looks in our bathroom. But white looks the nicest. 2) We made a commitment to clean out the boxes every day. I just did all three, and it took 3.5 minutes, including the time it took me to get a second bag because the first one was torn. So we're looking at spending half an hour or so a week on scooping out the boxes. BONUS... 3) Since we clean out every day, there aren't huge messes, and we haven't had to dump and refill yet. We top off every week or so, but I bought a 42-pound bag of litter before we moved in, filled each box, and we've been topping off... and we still have about 1/3 of the bag left. I was buying 14-17 pounds of cat litter EVERY WEEK because we were emptying it and starting over every weekend. 4) We use Fresh Step Multi-Cat. I hate clay litter. I love pine litter. However, when we lived in the trailer, we had awful fruit flies with the pine. Apparently, that just happens because there are larvae in it and they hatch and become... icky. We had the corn mix at Nuthaus for a while, and it got everywhere. Same with the really fine and "light" litter. We landed on Fresh Step Multi-Cat because it works best. I seriously think we've tried everything over the past couple of years. 5) We feed the cats a high-quality, no-filler food that cuts down on digestive waste. Better for the cats, easier for us. Probably a wash in the cost department, since they don't eat as much. (But, yes, it hurts spending more per pound on cat food than I do on some - most - of our meat.) So. Thursday is my day to sweep and mop all of the hard floors at Vogelfutter. Obviously, I touch-up sweep more regularly, but not necessarily every day. And certainly not multiple times per day. The boxes have cut down on tracking immensely. Like, I don't hate the cats anymore. I don't want to snuggle up with any of them, but I don't actively want them to pack their bags and get out, either. The other people around here seem fond of them. The boxes take up less floor space than the other boxes we had. Their footprint is smaller, but they are taller, and there is plenty of room for the cats. Also, they are basically square, with no stick-outy parts, like where the lid to the other boxes hinged on, etc. The boxes are sleek, with no place for dust and litter to collect. If litter gets on the lid, you can either sweep it back into the box with the brush on side of the scoop (each box comes with its own, so you don't have to lug one dirty scoop all over your house), or just open the lid and the litter falls back in. There is no way for the litter to fall off of the lid onto the floor unless maybe you were trying reallllly hard. Because the boxes are so deep, my toddler cannot reach the litter. This is not to say that he can't see it, and that he can't drop things into the open hole. Oh, yes, he can. But I typically just wait until he's on to something else, remove the offending item, scald it, and am grateful that the child can't grab a handful of doo. Another benefit of cleaning the boxes every day is that whatever ends up in there usually just ends up with some clay granules on it. Nothing too disgusting so far. Some of the reviews talk about how the boxes don't hold in the smells. I guess they don't, but I've only noticed a smell coming from one of the boxes (in the laundry room) one time since we moved. I'm guessing a cat had just gone, but that's also the most popularly-located box, and the most humid room, so it has a lot standing against it. Personally, I think it's better for the cats because the smell doesn't build up inside. We have one cat who will poop in the floor in front of the box if the odor in the box is not to her liking. That hasn't happened since we moved. (Again, probably also a function of our cleaning every day.) The boxes have rubber feet, so if your cat is particularly enthusiastic about exiting the box, they're still not going to push it across the floor. Oh, no one else has cats that do that? Hmm. Must be nice. So, all in all, my take is: Yes, it's freaking ridiculous that the litter boxes cost as much as they do. But we did a lot of research, and there's nothing that matches both the function and the look of these. I mean, you can throw $40 at a Clevercat top-entry box, but it's freaking huge and looks like you just sawed a hole in a storage container. Plus... so many nooks. So many crannies. In the end, we were fortunate to be able to afford these, and I can tell you that my quality of life as a stay-home mom has improved immeasurably. Love them. Cannot recommend them highly enough.

We originally bought the Modkat Top-Entry Litter Box specifically for our RV setup so we could bring our 15-year-old senior cat with us on trips instead of boarding her. Because she has Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), her daily routine involves a precise schedule for medications and subcutaneous fluids. Boarding a medical-needs cat quickly becomes astronomical (even for short weekend getaways) so figuring out a seamless, travel-friendly setup was non-negotiable. At home, we rely on a Litter Robot 4, but taking a giant automated unit on the road obviously wasn't an option. When I started researching compact, practical alternatives that could handle travel conditions, the Modkat immediately caught my eye. Compact Footprint for RV Living: As anyone who travels in an RV knows, floor space is at an absolute premium. The sleek, square footprint of the Modkat made it incredibly easy to tuck neatly into a corner without getting in the way or blocking walkways. Despite being compact on the outside, the interior offers plenty of room for her to turn around comfortably. She transitioned to the top-entry style surprisingly fast and used it without any hesitation throughout our trip. No-Mess Tracking & High-Sided Protection: The top-entry lid is a gamechanger for small-space living. The perforated top acts as a built-in walk-off mat so that when she jumps out, the extra litter on her paws falls right back through the grates into the box rather than scattering all over our narrow camper floors. Furthermore, because senior cats (especially those on fluid therapy) produce larger volumes of urine or sometimes stand high while peeing, traditional low-tray seams often leak. The high-sided tarp like liner in the Modkat fits seamlessly inside the rigid outer shell, ensuring everything stays completely contained inside the liner with zero risk of leaks onto the RV flooring. Durable Build & Easy Cleaning: The entire unit feels premium and solid. The reusable liner is tough, easy to wipe down, and snaps securely into place so it won't collapse or sag under heavy litter. Scooping and maintaining it during travel was straightforward and significantly less messy than managing a standard open tray on the road. Final Verdict: It is definitely a bit pricey for a manual litter box, but the thoughtful engineering, sturdy construction, and total mess control make it worth every penny, especially if you're managing small living quarters or traveling with a special-needs pet. It gave us total peace of mind and paid for itself almost immediately in saved boarding costs!

By far the BEST litter box we've ever used and I've tried a ton. I LOVE the top loader as it is the least messy litter box. There is never any litter outside the box or on the ground. The sides are high and give our cat plenty of room to move around. The liner is really nice because it prevents the box scratching, possible leaks, and you can replace it. So far it seems really durable. My favorite part is the latching lid that is attached and swivels so our cat can't accidentally fall in the box. It's well worth the money! The kids can clean the box too and there isn't a possibility of putting the lid on wrong. It's foolproof.

This litter box is a definite improvement from my conventional litter box. My cat tends to spend more time scratching around and throwing litter everywhere than actually using the box, so I needed a way to keep him from covering my bathroom floor with his litter. This absolutely does the job. He can scratch around all he wants but he can't throw the litter out. It's also easy to clean and I like that the liner is durable as my cat would easily rip through the plastic disposable liners I used previously. However, this box does little to contain the smell, so I find that I have to scoop it at least once a day (often more) to keep that litter box smell at bay. If smell is your main concern, I wouldn't go with this box. It's also pricey, but worth it to me for its sleek look and great design. My cat took to it very quickly and seems to prefer it to the conventional litter box we still have in another bathroom. However, I have yet to see my mom's cat use this box, probably because he is a 15ish lb cat, so this might not be the best box for large cats. Overall I really like this litter box as it does a great job keeping the litter inside the box and not on my floor.

6 YEARS LATER UPDATE! Yes, 4 year later and we are still using this, even bought a second one last year when we got a second cat. So far have thrown out the original liner, and hout enough extras to be able to swap and clean a liner once a month. Ive also switched to crystal litter and found that I was seeing leakage from the liner I never saw before. So now I use a dog pee pad in between the liner and the box. New kitten has senseitive skin and traditional clumping litter was causing her irritation. So that’s why we now use crystal litter. But still no better litter box option out there that my two small dogs can’t get into and eat the cat poop. So dog pee pad for the win! Original review from 2016: After reading reviews I was hesitant to buy, but figured I should give it ago and return it if our cat didn’t like it. So here is everything I have to say about it after having it for a few months- First: It does exactly what I hoped it would do, make it impossible for my 15# dogs to eat the cat poop. Yay! Second: Price, yes it isn’t cheap, yes Amazon does sell something similar for half the price. So why did I buy this? Well because the alternative is a knockoff that some company in China has made stealing Modcat’s intellectual property. Thankfully I am in a position to be able to afford to buy this and support the American company who originally came up with this idea. Third: Does my cat use it? Yes! We started using this when my foster kitten was about 2 months old, and able to jump upon it. I put her in it a few times and would pick her up out of her old litter box when she was about to go. After doing this a few times she got the hang of it and loves it. No more nosy dogs when she is trying to do her business. Fourth: Sturdiness, everything seems to be in order with no breakage. People had mention that the sides were falling down and not staying upright. I don’t know how that was happening, for us we have no problem. Also, have not seen any leaking from the bag. I suspect those that say that are not using a litter that takes while to clump. We use arm and hammer dust free lightweight and have seen no leakage. Fifth: Cleaning, is a breeze. Bag is easy to take out and clean, also very easy to scoop in between full litter swaps. The holes in the top also are a great addition for cleanliness. They really reduce the amount of litter that gets to the floor. Sixth: The cone of shame, makes this difficult to use. So a backup will probably be necessary to have as a just in case. Thankfully our kitten didn’t need to wear her cone for too long and survived. It was a tight fit, but she managed. So that’s all things I can think of. Hopefully enough random thoughts have been answered.

TLDR : It works great. Greatly reduces cat litter in our apartment. But, it’s expensive. The iPod of Litter Boxes indeed. Long version : We had been using a standard, inexpensive cat box. We got this when we got our kittens over a year ago. Our kitties were good about always using it for their business. But there was an issue of scattered kitty litter throughout the apartment. It was easy to spot on the wood flooring. And feel on our bare feet. It's a minor issue. But it's annoying. After the first couple weeks of sweeping it up with a broom a couple times each day, we got a cordless vacuum. The Dyson Animal V8. Boy does that thing suck! We love it. We also were using a couple of different size kitty litter mattes to help collect the scattered kitty litter. But still, kitty litter gets tracked throughout the apartment. About a month ago I saw a post on one of the FB Cat groups I'm on, asking for feedback on some various top entry cat boxes. That piqued my interested in trying one out. Modcat looked different, slick, and interesting. It was really easy to set up. It's a 16"x16"x15" box. There's a cloth/plastic liner, that fills the bottom. It says to replace this after 3 months. It's listed for $30 for a 3 pack from their website. Filling the box up with litter, the usable inside space seems small for our cats. Our cats are about 10 ~ 11lbs. Reminded me of using the bathroom on a jet airplane. Marky's head sticks out slightly out the top hole when he uses it. When we set it up, Marky was pretty curious about it. He was sniffing it. Climbing on it. Sticking his head in the hole to check out the inside. Cleo, who is much timider, was very cautious about checking it out. I was a little concerned about our cats using it. We were using the same cat litter. The instructions suggested using a scoop from the old cat box and placing it in the new one, to help with the transition. We did that. Within a couple of hours, Marky used it. I was so happy! But it neither of them seemed to use it for the rest of the night. Which concerned me. So I took the top off before I went to bed. I also picked up and placed Cleo in the box. She immediately used it. Then jumped out. The next morning, the cat box had been used again. But I wasn't sure which cat did. We were out for most of the day on Saturday. So we left the top off to help encourage our cats to use it. When we got back, the cat box had been used again. I also put the top back on. I started seeing cat litter getting collected on the top of the box. There are holes on the top. I assume some of it was falling back in. Which is good. The lid rotates upward, causing what's on top, to slide back in. Pretty neat design. The lid also can easily come off, when rotated in the upright position. But is otherwise pretty snug in place when down. Sturdy enough for our cat to climb on top of, or traveling in or out of it. By Monday night it appears the Modkat is being as frequently as our old cat box. Huzah! The amount of litter tracked throughout the apartment has greatly been reduced. Double Huzzah! It doesn't totally eliminate it. But it's a wonderful improvement. I don't have to vacuum as often. Nor vacuum as long than I use to. Tripple Huzzah! I'm pretty happy with this. It's got some neat design elements that work both for function and visuals. Never thought I'd geek out on a cat litter box. It greatly reduces tracked cat litter in our apartment. But it is expensive. $80 for 1 Modkat + 1 liner. $30 for a 3 pack of new liners. The iPod of Litter Boxes.

I'm a fan of good design, and when it comes to furniture or home goods I don't mind spending a little extra for an object pleasing to the eye or with a useful function. But seriously, a litter box? Ok, YES! I have 4 cats, including a chubby one, an elderly one, and a very quirky one who behaves badly when he doesn't like something. I also live in a small house with no secret place for a litter box, so right now it's behind a folding screen in the dining room. My biggest pet peeves about having cats is kitty litter being tracked around the house and sticking to bare feet, and the annoying task of cleaning the box. ModKat makes both of these issues minimal. The size is just right for even the chubby cat. The top grate catches the excess litter when the cat exits the box. The top is designed so that it can easily be flipped up (you push a button to release) for easy scooping, and it lifts out when its time to change the litter completely. Inside there is a liner that is made of of a sturdy plastic, somewhat like the blue plastic that Ikea bags are made out of. The liner has more shape to it and some kind of internal structure to give it shape, plus two handles that make it easy to lift out without getting your hands too close to anything yucky. Even the elderly cat seems fine with getting in and out - she is more agile than some elderly cats, but she is 19 and not as spry as she used to be. The picky cat took a little longer to get used to it, but he used it from day one. When I first put it down I think he thought it was a carrier and he might be going to the vet, but I put a little used litter from the old box in when I set it up, and he got it right away. It doesn't really make sense to me that it should hide the smell much better than the old covered litter box, but indeed it does seem to trap bad smells very well. The scoop that comes with it conveniently hangs from the notch where the top rests. I haven't had to hose the liner or box out yet, but I think it will be quick and easy to do. I bought this because I wanted something that doesn't look like a litter box if it's out in the open, after a friend recommended it. I hesitated because of the price for months, then just decided to go for it - very glad I did. I would buy a new large covered box once a year or so, to the tune of $25 or $30 each, so if this lasts for a couple of years it will ultimately be the same cost - and overall I'll save for not having to go though a few plastic liners a week. I highly recommend this well designed box! Buy it - you won't regret it!

Lo uso da diversi mesi (acquistato per impedire al cane che soffre di pica di mangiare la sabbietta). Il prodotto è veramente molto costoso, se non fosse stato che non potevo farne a meno non credo che lo avrei preso, nessun pezzo di plastica può giustificare un costo così elevato. Esteticamente è molto bello, robusto, non si ribalta, la grata in alto solida per un gatto di circa 5 kg. Per adesso non ho ancora dovuto sostituire il sacco interno, non ha lacerazioni però.... quando la lavo con il disinfettante come facevo con le altre lettiera rimane un po' la puzza di urina sul telo, cosa che prima non accadeva, sarà la trama che assorbe? Non so.. è un telo come le buste ikea Aggiornamento dopo più di un anno: Ancora robusto e intatto nonostante il gatto sia passato a quasi 6 kg.. anche il telo è quello originale, ho risolto il problema di pulirlo: lo sciacquo sotto l'acqua e poi lo metto in lavatrice lavaggio rapido con un po' di detersivo da bucato e disinfettante, centrifuga 1200 rpm inclusa. Il telo non si deforma, esce pulitissimo e senza sforzi! Devo dire che anche se è costato.. ne vale la pena, è bello da vedere e non ho più sabbia in giro per casa. Anche se il mio cane purtroppo non c'è più se dovesse rompersi lo ricomprerò.

Obwohl das Produkt m.E. überteuert ist, gibt es von mir Bestnoten (und wer mich kennt, weiß, dass es das für mich als kritischer und sachkundiger Verbraucher äußerst selten gibt). Warum? Ich habe jahrelang nach einer passenden Lösung für mein Katzenproblem gesucht, insbesondere auch hier angepriesene Produkte ausprobiert, wie z.B. patentierte Spezial-Unterlagen etc. etc. ... alles hat bisher nichts geholfen, alles letztendlich unnötige Fehlkäufe. Meine Katze hat es bisher irgendwie immer geschafft nach dem Toilettengang das Katzenstreu in der ganzen Wohnung zu verteilen. Des Öfteren lief sogar Urin aus der seitlichen Einstiegsklappe raus, jedenfalls gab es immer eine riesen Sauerei.... Durch den clever gestalteten oberen statt seitlichen Einstieg gelangt jetzt nichts Ungewolltes mehr nach draußen, außer natürlich die Katze selbst, und die hat das Klo sofort angenommen und dem alten auch sofort vorgezogen. Der Inlay ist m.E. auch völlig überteuert, aber auch hier ist die Qualität top, meine Katze wütet und kratzt jedesmal in der Toilette rum als gäbe es kein morgen mehr, der Inlay hat das bisher gut ausgehalten, jede andere Plastiktüte wäre schon längst in tausend Fetzen zerrissen. Nebenbei ist das Katzenklo auch noch ein wahrer Hingucker, äußert elegant ! Ich würde sagen der Apple unter den Katzenklos :-) : Schick, funktional aber teuer ...

My kitty has an issue with "step-in" type boxes and trays, and always ends up sticking her butt on the outside - making a mess on the floor. The design of this box is perfect for this issue and my floors are clean again once more. I really love the tarpaulin liner; it is tough and scratch-proof and makes it much easier to empty.
