Cuisinart CPT-420 Touch to Toast Leverless 2-Slice Toaster, Brushed Stainless Steel

I was hesitant to spend so much money on a toaster because I've been burned (sorry) many times before. The last one was a cheap model that lasted about 3 months. I read the reviews here and went for it because the levers are what had failed on the junk toaster. I fell in love on first use, granted I used just plain home-style white bread, but the toast came out perfectly browned on the standard 4 setting. I hadn't had perfect toast in years. It brought to mind the 2001 Hugh Jackman movie “Kate & Leopold” where Leopold is disgusted by “the General of Electric” and rigs his own timer on the toaster device. Anyway, I had to calm myself down and put off writing a gushing review this long because I was so charmed by the leverless action, watching the toast go slowly down and up on its own, seeing the dash display show how much longer, and watching perfect toast rise. That first week I wanted to record it toasting and send the video to my family –which I did NOT do, thank you! And, it is fast compared to other toasters and toaster ovens I've used over the years. I was afraid it was too good to be true and now I’m afraid that I've jinxed breakfast. It works on English muffins, When Pigs Fly Harvest Bread (not high), and bagels. I prefer to NOT use the bagel setting because we keep ours in the fridge and I like to heat the outside too. Note: one bagel was pre-sliced wrong and was a tight fit but that was because it had been sliced incorrectly. I had trouble with an Italian Bread that was too long for the slots. I tipped it on edge a bit for the shorter slices but had to cut the others. Some reviewers have issue with the beeps claiming they are too loud. When each 2-slot side is done it shortly beeps twice and sometimes if both finish at the same time, it will only beep twice instead of four times. I have no problem with the volume. It is quieter than my other kitchen appliance beeps. Because the prior junk toaster levers did not raise the toast high enough, I was concerned and bought my first pair of tongs to use with this toaster. Although I don’t need them because it raises everything high enough to remove with fingers, I've become civilized and love the tongs too. (Kuhn Rikon 6-Inch Small Silicone Chef's Tongs, Red – I’d be careful if there is any chance of these tongs being abused with non-cooking tasks in your house. There is a steel rod inside the silicone coating and could be a problem if exposed.) In summary… I wish the slots were an inch longer and slightly wider but only for specialty bread needs, not an issue for "normal" breads. I wish it came in non-stainless version. I wish the crumb tray access was from the front. But all of that is not enough to change my 5-star adoration of the toasting it does, and that it shows how much longer to go with bars and beeps when done. 6 stars if I could for the toasting.

Bought this to replace a 70 year old Sunbeam T20 that had started getting a bit cranky -- the automatic start when you drop a piece of bread in the slot wouldn't always work and the wife was getting frustrated. I wanted to buy another "leverless" toaster like the T20, and the Cuisinart seemed to be about the only option, plus it had good reviews. We're please with it -- not expecting it to last 70 years, but hopefully more than 7 or 8 which would be much longer than the average ones we had bought prior to finding the T20 in an antique store some 30 years ago. We like the wide slots for bagels and homemade bread. Toasting is very consistent slice to slice -- you just need to experiment a time or two to get the setting you like depending on different breads. We've used many toasters over the years, and none of them ever toasted both sides exactly the same. The T20 for example had different style heating elements on the sides, so I was happy to see that the elements in the Cuisinart looked identical, and I was expecting equal "brownness" on both sides. Not the case -- one side is always a bit browner than the other for some reason. The clean out trays are convenient, but they don't collect all the crumbs that have fallen down -- even after turning it upside down and gently shaking it (per instructions), you can't get all the crumbs out. No different than any other toaster we've owned, but it just seems something could be done to improve cleaning, so I only gave that 3 stars. We're please though with the purchase -- looks nice on the counter, has nice functionality with the various options, and performs as well if not better than other's we've owned.

Everyone knows the best way to toast bread is in an irons skillet over the top of a (preferably) coal fired stove. Sure it's a process, as you have to get up early in the morning to gather kindling and newspapers, get the coal and place it evenly in the firebox, then wait about an hour or so for the stove top to reach temperature, then another half hour for the skillet to get to the proper toasting range. Yes, my great aunt cooked with a coal fire stove for her family for 65 years in Appalachia until she died in the 1980s. BEST FOOD EVER!! Or.. you can put aside your first world problems regarding ever-so-slight variations of unevenly toasted bread exterior, and appreciate the fact that the CPT-440 is a marvel of modern engineering that can simultaneously toast two sets of two, at different levels of toastiness. Gone are the days of straining down a small lever against the leaf-springs extracted from a Dodge Power Wagon, just to get the appliance to accept your lousy two slices of toast. Gone are the days that your toast is catapulted across the kitchen skyline in your vain attempt to catch them. Unlike the coal fired stove, you simply need add 1-4 slices of toast, muffins, waffles, etc, push the button/s, and watch the grain based products sink slowly and quietly into an already preheating toasting box. A couple of minutes later, as the appliance digitally counts down the progress, your grain product is amazingly elevated back into real life, toasted to varying degrees of perfection... depending on your tolerance and reasonable expectations of such things as weighted against the ROI of your product investment (price). In other words, it toasts as good as any other toaster for far less, or far more money. If you like stainless steel, 4 slots, push button operation with motorized action, multiple preset button settings, and LCD display... then this toaster can't be beat for the price. I like it. My significant other loves it and uses it constantly, as intended. We've had no issues or defects, though it looks like some folks have had some apparent issues with consistency, though it clearly doesn't hold with the mass of the purchases.

My last two toasters -- a Cuisinart and a KitchenAid -- both got tossed after a the lever stopped staying down. I took the Cuisinart apart and found a broken plastic part that I could not fix, so I didn't even bother trying to fix the KitchenAid. When I saw this toaster had no levers, I figured what the heck. It probably has even more moving parts, but I;m taking a chance on it. So far so good. I won't go into details about even toasting. It toasts just fine. It looks good. It toasts a little faster than my previous toasters, I think. The 1-7 settings are fine, Bottom line: I would recommend this toaster even though it's a little pricey. If you like the look and want something different, get it. It does the job. Now, that I've recommended it, I want to mention a couple of things I think are important to know before you buy it. First, if you like your English muffins toasted brown, the highest setting (7) doesn't do that. It just barely toasts an English muffin. Very little or no browning -- ever. I thought I'd end up toasting them a little more every time I had them and thought that would be a real pain. Instead I just got used to eating them "slightly" toasted. They're hot, but still soft inside. I don't miss the crunch you get when you really brown them. But if you like yours hard and crunchy, get a different toaster. It toasts bread just fine. I've had toasters that, when turned up all the way, would blacken bread or toast an English muffin into a crispy, crunchy, nearly blackened disk. I guess there's no point in toasting anything that much. However, be advised that at the highest setting this toaster will not come close to doing that. Second, the toaster beeps twice when the toasting is completed. It's not that loud or that annoying to me, but it's loud enough to hear throughout the house. Like a microwave beep. If that kind of thing bothers you, get a different toaster. There's no way to disable it.

Probably because of the large number of reviews it took a long time to pick out a new toaster. We finally picked the KRUPS KH734D, but that turned out to be wrong – you can read my review here on Amazon. So, we now went with the Cuisinart CPT-440. We picked it from the reviews here and also from reading Consumer Reports. I’m happy to report this time we got a great toaster! I was a little concerned about the automatic up/down feature for the bread, but so far it’s worked great, and I don’t have to worry about the children man-handling a manual lever and breaking it. The overall toastyness of the bread is pretty consistent. I have noticed that if I put in bread that was frozen in the middle but only cold on the outside, as expected the bread gets darker on the outside and lighter on the inside. If the bread/bagel/waffle/etc is pretty much the same temperature thought then the color is pretty even. If I remember I’ll take some pictures next time. I have used the defrost feature and it work pretty well. Sometimes I just nuke the frozen bread or bagels and then put them in the toaster, and other times I just let the toaster handle it. For frozen waffles I just use the toaster. I like the Bagel feature where it will just toast the cut side of the bagel and just warm up and leave chewy the other side. My son commented, twice, that “this toaster sure does a good job on bagels”. If you like your bagel toasted on both sides then just press the toast button instead. I kind of like the cut side really toasted, and the remainder just slightly toasted, so I start it in bagel mode (heat only on cut side) and then looking at the countdown display about3/4 of way through I switch to Toast mode (the heating element then comes on both sides). Yum. I tried English Muffins in bagel mode and toast mode, and I like them in 100% Toast mode. It weighs around 7 pounds, and has stampings on the top for bagel direction and one slice of bread toasting. Come to think of it I haven’t toasted just one slice of bread yet. As others have commented the beep doesn’t seem offensive to me, and when my wife uses it and I’m still in the bedroom I don’t hear it. The sides don’t seem to get overly hot when it’s in use – I’ve moved it a few times when it’s on and it wasn’t hot. I haven’t used the reheat button yet – I seem to eat it before I need to reheat. Maybe I’ll give it a shot some day to see how it works.

I'm very happy with this toaster so far. It seems like it's very difficult to find a decent quality toaster these days without spending quite a lot of money. My first toaster lasted me through college and the first 18 or so years of marriage. That toaster cost around $15. Since then (the past 6 years), I've probably owned at least another 7 toasters, all of them fairly inexpensive...under $40. It never fails that one of the sides quits working. Even a super cheap appliance should last more than a year. So, this time I decided to try a more expensive appliance. I do notice the difference in the quality of the build. This toaster is quite a lot heavier than my other toasters have been. It really has a lot of weight to it. I mainly toast English muffins and notice that I don't have to turn my muffins around in order to get them to toast evenly, like I had to do with my previous toasters. This toaster seems to have more even toasting. I also like the bagel function. Very smart that it actually only toasts on one side of the bagel. My previous toaster had a bagel function also, but it still toasted both sides....never worked properly. I will say that it would be extremely rare for me to actually toast a bagel. Bagels belong in the oven, IMO, but my son will toast a bagel if he's in a hurry. :) I also like the leverless function. I went for this model because so many people had complained about their toasters (various brands) having the levers break off. The toast moves up and down without trouble and the toasting function reliably turns on and off. My mother has the manual version of this toaster (or at least very similar), but it doesn't seem nearly as sturdy and didn't toast as nicely. Regarding the "beep" when the toast is done...it's definitely not overly loud or intrusive. Sometimes I don't even notice it. It's definitely not loud enough to disturb someone in another room, which was reported with some of the other toaster brands. Basically, just a short reminder that you had something toasting. Overall, I'm very pleased so far. Hopefully this toaster is as good quality as it seems to be. Just ordered a new Cuisinart coffee pot since the carafe on the old one broke and replacement pots aren't available. We're counting on Cuisinart quality. Will update if anything changes, but so far we're enjoying perfect toast from this machine.

This is a perfect little toaster, I was skeptical at first, however, it works great on the run. I originally had a toaster oven, that takes almost 5 minutes to produce one slice of toast. This little handy toaster from Cuisinart is especially nice because it does not have a manual handle to drop the toast or bagels. it automatically lowers the toast or bagels and even pop tarts for my children, and it rises within a couple of seconds, based on your selected browning settings which go as high as four. There is an illuminated screen that shows how much longer the toast will take to finish, and if you are in a complete rush and can’t wait the remaining few seconds, you can also cancel, and it will pop up. Good purchase, thus far, and I will continue to use it for quick toast. If anything happens to change my opinion on this side of I will repost. At this point I’ve been using this item for about a week, and it works perfectly. Update: Now that I’ve been using the toaster since January and it is now The middle of April, I can honestly say that this Is a must have in the kitchen space. Toaster ovens are great for larger items such as grilled cheese, and items that require more preparation. This toaster is absolutely perfect, for toasting bagels, and getting that chewy inside and crisp and brown on the outside. Toast is perfect, and the best part is it doesn’t take more than a few seconds For a quick on the go breakfast, from the package to the table. My toaster and my coffee maker are side-by-side and I have toast and coffee within minutes. If you’ve ever had to pry Your toast out of a toaster with a manual handle when it does not completely rise after browning, you will especially love this automated toaster. Well, worth the purchase. I've had this toaster for a few months, and I have to say that if ever there was a kitchen appliance that I love (besides my convection oven, Robot Coupe, Kitchen Aid mixer, and Vitamix blender, it's this toaster! I really do not like gadgets. So the items I have in my kitchen cover a variety of tasks, and are bought to stand the test of time (both my Robot Coupe and Kitchen Aid mixer are over 30-years-old and they are still going strong!) This toaster takes bagels with ease, and self adjusts to the thicknesses of the many types of bread or pastries that gently descend into the hot, heating elements. When this toaster is done with its culinary offering a chime goes off to alert you. As your food item is being toasted there is even a display to tell you how long you have to go till its completed. Its very easy to clean and operate. Essentially, I will never go back to the old toaster style with two skinny slots and a defective browning slider, EVER. Jan 6, 2020, I have had this toaster for over a year, and it is still working wonderfully. One thing that annoys me is Amazon's lack of control with reviews. I read some of them thinking I would see reviews for the Cusinart toaster that I bought, only to realize they clumped together a whole bunch of other reviews, that don't belong, which can be confusing. With that said, I still LOVE this toaster. It hasn't let me down...toast, bagels, pastries, they all still come out beautifully. I have yet to have any burnt offerings from it, and I love that the clean up is a breeze.

This replaced an older one that we had. We like the automatic feed feature. ANd it does what it's suppose to do! Toast bread! And bagels! And it does it evenly, and nicely. So far, we are very pleased with the purchase.

I obviously like this toaster. We have one at our summer house. When we got rid of the space hog toaster over, I wanted another one. I like pushing a button and watching the bread go down.
