Can this be installed on the side Eve of the house? I need a back draft damper for my vent hood.

Not unless it is facing upward would you want to do that. While it has some springs on the flaps, I would doubt the spring's long term reliability in closing. In my installation, I have a 6" duct from the fan hood to an adapter into the 8" Damper / Duct - out of the weather. And in Florida essential to keeping out qpp degree humidity. Works as advertised and works quite. Best one I've found

I have only 3" of accessible 8" pipe to place the damper; will this be enough space for the fan to open completely?

Yes, you should be OK With 3”. The flaps open outwards (into the 2.8” depth of the unit).

how tall is the damper

I installed it awhile ago but it is an 8" O.D. damper. It has a nice soft rubber seal around the outside and should fit perfect in an 8" exhaust pipe.
