Not Auralex / Still A Great Bargain
"Listen to me Linda!"Lot of folks complaining about the foam being vacuum sealed. These cost about $2.30 each. $2.30 per sq. ft. I bought 72 total. Enough to cover an8' x 8.5' area. I expected them to be as flat as cardboard when they arrived. It was close. About 1/2" with two pieces sandwiched together. Some I had to peel apart. I let them set for 48 hours. I'm in no hurry. About 30% seemed to expand to the advertised size. Obviously for this kind of money we can expect to put in a little effort. The instructions say that if they don't reach that size, soak them in clean water, I did this one at a time in my kitchen sink. Then wring the foam out by hand. I liked how the shape recovered so much... went ahead and hydrated all of them. I placed them on the swing in the Texas heat to dry out. The product is as advertised & if you purchase these, I say, open the packages, seperate & leave in the room to acclimate then, go ahead and hydrated them. By far the best method. Really happy with these. They're not quite as dense as Auralex or Sonex. Still, a nice skyline diffuser at 1/4 the cost!My application is to kill 1st relection behind my studio monitors. It's working well! Cost effective product that performs as advertised.Saved Control Room bucksGreat looksNice absorptionCharcoal Gray color is to the black side( much darker compared to Auralex charcoal color )

Excellent value, panels as described, purchase with confidence!
These panels were used in a music room and improved the acoustics dramatically. I used this simple method to expand the panels: Soak in water for a few minutes, wring dry, throw into dryer for 20 minutes. Very low failure rate. Every once in awhile there will be a panel that will not expand properly, but these are few and far between. The smell is rather mild and was not an issue for me, totally eliminated after the dryer run. I would purchase these again.

Don't freak out when they arrive compressed
I've been a studio engineer for over 30 years but only recently built my own voice booth at home. I don't have a million dollar budget, so I bought this foam. It arrived vacuum sealed in a box that seemed waaay to small to be holding 24 squares of this stuff. I was pissed off and almost embarrassed to have fallen for the low price expecting anything decent. I was about to write a scathing review but then I thought, well, I'll go ahead and follow their instructions first and see what happens, so I can write a complete review. So they recommend letting the squares air out for 3 days, or alternatively, soaking them in water for 3 minutes, wringing them out, and letting them air dry. I choose the latter option.Almost immediately after submerging them in water, they began to take shape. The vacuum packing really squeezes every bit of life out of the foam, and the sponging action of foam in water totally fills up all those microscopic air pockets with fluid, forcing the foam to expand to its original full shape. It makes total sense. So I squished the foam in the water a few times, flipped them over and did it again. I also helped the process a little by massaging each part of the foam that sticks up and helping them to unstick from other parts. Then I squeezed the excess water out, not too hard so as not to tear any foam, and set them out on my deck to dry. I would avoid using a dryer or putting them in direct sunlight.A few hours later they were nice and dry, fully fluffed out to what I expected based on the vendor's photos. No creases, curves, or mis-shapen edges. So DO NOT BE FOOLED by the way they look when they arrive. They WILL get better once you do as instructed. It really doesn't take that long to do the soak and dry, and it's saving you a boat load of money by you doing some of the work yourself. Now, I gave it 4 stars and not 5 - why is that?Well, if you buy the traditional studio professional products, like Auralex or Ultimate Acoustics, their foam seems to be a little more dense, and thus likely more effective. I'd like to see a little more density out of this foam to give it a full 5 stars, but overall I am very happy with this purchase, and as I stated earlier, I was pleasantly surprised at how these turned out.I nearly returned these immediately without even trying to follow the instructions, much like the other recent reviewer who was horrified by what he got when he opened the box. I have included a photo of the foam right out of the box, and again after I soaked it and let it dry. The difference is night and day. Slow down, don't be in a rush, and soak these babies for a few minutes to really get them the way they're supposed to be before you make any decisions. As for sound absorption, I have half of them up and I can already hear a difference. It does control reflections off of drywall, so I can say it does its job. I'll edit this review later once I've had some actual recording done.Edit 8/4/22:I just wanted to add that their info graphics are little bit misleading. They have one image in particular that seems to illustrate sounds passing through the foam to the other side is greatly reduced, in high, mid, and low frequencies. This is false. This could lead one to mistakenly buy these things to reduce sound levels in other rooms, such as to keep your neighbor happy while you bang away on drums. That's not how foam treatment works. Foam reduces "reflections" inside a room, the way adding furniture to an empty room reduces the echo in the room. Adding furniture does NOT make it quieter in the room next door.If you want to reduce the noise going THROUGH a WALL, you need denser material. Think multiple layers of drywall, bricks, concrete, plywood, etc. Lower frequencies require denser material and more of it in order to block them. This is why you can hear the bass in someone's car a mile away in your house but not the high frequencies. Low frequencies just permeate everything. So use this stuff to deaden the room, not to keep adjacent rooms quiet.

Hit or miss quality
Our of 24 panels, two never expanded to the point where they were usable at all. Eight of them expanded more than 90%, so with some coaxing I managed to make use of them. Fourteen panels expanded well after leaving them out for four days. The smell is awful. It's like a strong permanent marker smell. I had to leave them on the back porch for a week to air them out to remove the smell. After all that, the soundproofing is pretty good. We have them in the basement around my drum kit. Nothing is going to block the sound of a drum kit, but proper placement of the panels made a noticeable difference on the decibel meter. in upstairs rooms.

Know what to expect in your package.
I don't write reviews to often but I do like this product and noticed it had some bad ones. Some of these reviews are simply user error. They do come super flat as anything made of foam would... but it has instructions on how to re-expand the foam quickly and slowely. So expect 1 24 pack to be about 3-4in in height until each panel expands to the full 2in following instructions of course. These are not professional panels but work great for what they are and the price.

Does not work. Only purchase if you want black wallpaper
Very disappointed. Does not even minimally help with sound. Does not have any acoustic properties at all. If you are looking for something other than black wallpaper, you should look somewhere else.

Follow this advice
They're compressed when they arrive. Separate them & lay them out for 48 hrs. Most will fluff up. The ones that don't soak in water & wring out. Let them completely dry & they'll fluff up. I used Gorilla 2 sided tape & they greatly reduced drum noise. Order double of what you think.
