says "up to 5 times" What does that mean?

It means they aren't entirely sure, and are just repeating the marketing claims made by previous sellers of the same item. At any given time, there are about half a dozen Amazon sellers of rebranded versions of this, all from the same factory. I've had two from different sellers (lost one, broke one, about to order another – probably this one, as the current best price with the case included). They're all identical other than the branding on them. The magnification is really around 2x to maybe 3x at most. This is still quite helpful, and I love this thing. It's best as a reader placed directly on a book/magazine/whatever surface. Other magnifiers are better held a different distance. It's good to have several different kinds, for different use-cases.
