i understand the cpu power consumption, but are both the 8 pin and the 4 pin supplied with power, or is the 8 pin the only one with power ??

All pins are supplied with power. It can be used as a 4 pin, 8 pin, or 8+4 pin CPU power connector on a motherboard.

I don’t get how this would work, the original cable still only sends out the same amount of power. Wouldn’t it be better to run 2 separate cpu cables?

There is enough juice to feed the extra connector from the power supply. You really only need this cable if you overclock. Some power supplies have the extra connector already on the harness. In any event, this connector works well.

Is this compatible with the gamemax 1050w psu?

It looks like your power supply has two CPU eight pin connectors (modular). Yes it will work. It works on all eight pin CPU connectors. It is used to power the extra four pin socket on the MB so the CPU don't starve for power if you are overclocking.
