Get Started in Gujarati Absolute Beginner Course: The essential introduction to reading, writing, speaking and understanding a new language (Teach Yourself)

Frustrating but Workable
If it weren't for the absolute dearth of Gujarati-English language instruction texts, I would be giving this text 1 star. That being said, it's much better than most other options. Dwyer is a professor and while her translations are often a little too scholarly/elite, they are on the whole accurate. There are clear rules provided for Gujarati grammar and she explains them with precision. Unfortunately, the text itself is laid out terribly. The text written in Gujarati script is tiny and thus difficult to read – especially for beginners. Instead of outlining what vocabulary you will be learning, the text sprinkles new words throughout the chapter without ever clearly summarizing what was covered. This is especially irksome as there is only a Gujarati-English dictionary at the back – NO English-Gujarati one. Plus, there is a distinct lack of practice questions and no space in the book to work on the few prompts that are offered. In short, it's lousy, but until someone makes a real textbook, this is the best you're going to get.

I pre-ordered this, but I guess I should have waited so I could have had the second audio CD.

I missed the window to return it so I'm stuck with it - useless.
I ordered it and the book came with one CD that didn't work in any of my CD players. I exchanged it for another and the CD still didn't work. I missed the window to return it so I'm stuck with it - useless.

But who's it for?
It wasn't for me, that's for sure. I'm going to Gujarat as a tourist, and I wanted a series of relevant situations that would bring out the vocabulary I needed, plus simple grammar. I'm not exactly the world's greatest linguist, but the BBC Talk Japanese helped me make myself understood by using that approach. This course is instead very grammar-orientated, and seems to be aimed at people of Gujarat heritage who have missed out on learning the language, or University students who are learning in something of a vacuum. You can at least access some recorded dialogues (via the internet), but there are few recorded practice exercises. So...better than nothing (and quite likely the best on offer) but disappointing.

Difficult to read
The book appears to be ideal for a beginner, however the lettering is very smalland the printing very faint making reading and concentrating very difficult even with my reading glasses.

Schade...
