Like most filters, you need to run water through this first with like a soda bottle or something before you drink it. It will release black/blue water for a couple oz at first. Not sure why.It clears out then you can drink and enjoy. I've tested with nasty LA tap water and it works well, no bad taste.(also try best to reverse blow out water when done, its hard but don't want liquid to stay in there)

I am told there is no way to communicate with the seller so I have to write a review and see if they answer me. I bought this as it was a good price, (reduced by 25% the day after I bought it) always a red flag - but mainly as it says it filters out chlorine and organics which most others water filter straws do not. As with Brita or Pur who actually list what they remove I was expecting some kind of graph or certificate to be included as to what this water filter will remove. NOTHING - Just really poor instructions. It just says it removes 99.999999% of "Tiny Matters". I'm a scientist and 6 nines after the decimal is incredibly impressive (if it's real) but then again who know what the definition of tiny matters is?. They should be PROUD of the performance of their water filter and publish what it can do. ALSO - I think the Backwash is a joke. They give you a 10cc syringe with a standard end piece. This is supposed to be inserted in the mouthpiece to backwash the filter. There is no tight fit. If you inject clean water into the mouthpiece it will just pout out the sides on the top. There is no way that process can produce the pressure needed to backwash the filter. ALSO #2 - the diagram of the "4-Stages Filtration" must be wrong. The flow direction might be right but the mouthpiece needs to be on the other end. It should never work as the diagram shows. The last stage is to filter out large particles? Really? The quality of the instructions and descriptions makes you wonder about the quality of the product. It will depend on the answers (If I get any) as to whether I will return this product.)I have heard nothing from anyone so I am returning this product. It may be great - it may be wonderful but there is no way of knowing. A product like this should be proud to put in writing what it can and cannot do. Package it with the product. Not just in the Amazon information.

I would like to recommend this product. I bought this two-pack water filter straw for my wife and me because we were planning for camping. I was browsing so much camping gear on Amazon until I found this product. I was attracted by this product is that this package came with the backwash syringe, and water pouch. It allowed me to store some of the water. The filtration rate of this life straw is fast. And no impurities can be seen from the water pouch. I see some people asking if they have to lie down and drink water. Please don't worry! This camping gear straw has a water tube that allowed you to drink without laying on the ground. This product is a good choice if you need some hiking gears.

I have owned and used the life straw as well as using iodine tabs in the past.I purchased this set because of:1. The versatility2. PriceVersatility: You can use it with bottles, with your mouth, with and without the strawKeeping my face away from bad water should I have to drink it using these devices is ahuge plus for several reasons. Also being able to use it to also store water is a HUGE +I will if at all possible make a purifying system to remove all the gunk prior to boiling.But sometimes you have to do what you have to do, if that's the case I will use theseover any other device.All that being said do what you think is best for you.

Utilized during a 14er! Found a stream and utilized the Water Filter Straw. Tasted great and was able to rehydrate. Did not get sick from unclean water after usage. Would recommend and purchase again for hiking friends and myself.
