According to the manufacturers website there is no expiration date and it is not a 4 year shelf life. It states on this FAQ for these tablets...

Does Potable Aqua® have an expiration date?
No, Potable Aqua is an EPA registered product that does not require an EXP date. The shelf life of Potable Aqua is dependent on storage conditions. Product should be stored in a cool, dry place, in adherence with the label’s storage guidelines to maximize product shelf life. When reviewing your product, as a general rule tablets that are grayish/brown in color are good and tablets that are yellowish/green should be replaced. Bottles that have been opened should be replaced for the next season. The number printed on the side of each bottle is the manufacturer’s lot code, not an expiration date. The lot code can be used to identify the date of manufacture of that bottle of PA. The lot code is comprised of month, year, and batch number, such as 51507. This bottle was made in May of 2015, and was the 7th batch

There is tons of bad information from both this seller that answered this question and reviewers here on amazon. Research products yourself before buying.

Is this an option if you don't want to boil?

Yes. I usually just store these in case the SHTF, but on a recent trip to S America where you ever drink fron the tap, we'd buy water in those big 20 gallon bottles ( still not safe). Then for my 2 yr old & me we'd drop one of each of these pills in a 2 liter Brita filter. No Montezuma's revenge for first time ever. Always better to boil, but not alway available or practable.

Product arrived in torn brown padded bag that was taped up. No expiration in the bag or label. Just a lot number. How do you determine the expiration?
