The Essential Clash

I was glad to get this. The DVD contains all the Clash's commercial videos (previously available on a VHS called Video Clash), plus some older live and interview footage. As a bonus, you get a longish silent B & W film written and directed by Strummer, with the band, friends and crew as actors. The plot is an amusing gangster send-up. Sound quality is terrific on the whole DVD and there's a nice little booklet inside. If you're a Clashie as I am, you must buy this for your collection.

There really isn't much one can say about this product. It has the Clash's videos, and if you are into the Clash, you can get all of their videos plus some extra "stuff." The Clash are what they are, which is a damn fine rock and roll outfit. The videos are okay, even very good in one or two instances, but nothing about this disc is remarkable. It's just fodder for those of us who want or need it.

Anyone who loves the Clash should absolutely buy this dvd - the videos are great to have, and it's awesome that you can create your own playlist and listen to/watch them in whichever order you want. I also loved the silent video they made (Hell W10), which is super amusing/entertaining and is set to an excellent soundtrack. I am sooo glad I bought this dvd...go for it if you love the band - seriously.

Pity The Clash couldn't have picked on Pink Floyd instead. Here in the infancy of video the maestros of the Westway prove their live supremacy. "Tommy Gun" is riveting. Strummer, wearing a t-shirt designed to niggle the British government, displays some suspect dental work. Meanwhile Mick Jones strangles his fret board and teases out single bullet shots. Even when losing their way in "Clampdown" they're exciting. A good deal of the footage was shot in New York, including "The Radio Clash" which features the white men in funkensmith palais. Clearly enjoying himself, Joe hoists a massive jam box and the band lines up for a memorable cats on a fence dance (they were always about input, about soaking up the local atmosphere). And yes, they could be incredibly silly. At times they look like boy scouts on jamboree, complete with berets, and the unearthed black and white film needs reinterring. Suffice to say Strummer was a better songwriter than filmmaker. The extras bit, a real highlight of the disc, presents The Clash in all their lean fury. While playing pool, Jones describes the moment of conception - cut to the band alone in a warehouse, guitars at the ready. They ignite into "1977" like amphetimined sinew jammed in a jar, set to explode. Incredible.

This is the only dvd I know of that comprises Clash videos, live footage, promo material and their super rare blck & white film, Hell W10. Nicely put together and a great 90 minutes of Clash history.

The Quality of the Video is fantastic. Recommended for any clash fan
