Can i use this product for butter?

Yes you can. Even margarine . But never put oil in it.

Is the purpose of the candle to melt the chocolate or cheese? Or to just keep it warm?

The candle is there to mostly keep it warm. The cheese/chocolate would need to be already melted and poured into the fondue mug. The candle will still melt the chocolate if you were to throw in whole chunks of chocolate but will take much longer to melt.

Can you cook directly on this or do you have to cook on stove then transfer?

You can melt the chocolate in the mug using the microwave because it is safe however, I would recommend melting the chocolates in a cup and putting it in the mug after to avoid over poor chocolates.
