Second Edition! “THANK YOU !!!! I have been suffering from IBS and SIBO for years .... I came across your "gut health protocol" and followed it to a T... and I truly have not felt this good in years !!!!!! You have given me my life back !!!!! I never realized how sick I was, and I forgot how a healthy person should feel. I thought I had to live my life feeling the way I did. Not the case at all !! To everyone out there.... read the gut protocol, follow what is suggested...its so worth it !!!” — Jackie A. “I've been doing John's protocol for the last two months and it has helped immensely with my SIBO. My bloating and stomach distention are pretty much gone, ditto stools pretty much normal and motility much better. I'm not necessarily 100% better, but it's the first thing I've done beside a ridiculously restrictive diet that has actually helped me heal. In fact, previously my diet was slowly becoming more and more restricted. Give it a try, it's good stuff. And, hey John Herron, thank you!” — Michelle M. “I would like to share that I have had such great success. My gut is probably about 90% better. I realize that it still probably has issues and this is a journey of healing and keeping it well, but I have had no bloating, belching, constipation or diarrhea, and limited moments of soreness. I feel that I am digesting my food and the shortness of breath, heart palpitations, and discomfort in my throat are gone too.” — Berea F. “I just looked at your latest protocol and I have to say it is totally amazing! It seems more thorough than most of the 5 books I have read. Were/are you something famous for your job?” — Debbie H. The Gut Health Protocol outlines natural approaches to tackling dozens of stomach and intestinal health issues using only scientifically studied natural herbs, supplements and diet. Supplements commonly available in local health foods stores and at your favorite online retailer. Many common ailments often have gut issues as their underlying cause, conditions such as: recurring stomach aches, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, IBS, acid reflux, nausea, eating disorders, eczema, obesity, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and even major depression have all been linked to gut issues. The root of many of these problems can often be traced quite convincingly to Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), intestinal candida albicans, h.pylori bacteria overgrowth in the stomach, bacterial dysbiosis throughout the gut or other secondary conditions that these infections cause. The Gut Health Protocol can usually resolve these issues, and without damaging antibiotics or steroids. Even if you choose to go the antibiotic route The Gut Health Protocol can make the treatment more effective and can help prevent serious complications. Over 1200 published scientific studies are summarized and explained in easy to understand language, over 500 pages long. Unlike many self-help books nearly everything in the book is based on science, not opinion. The author takes all of this brilliant research and translates it to the practical application of healing and caring for our gut. The book is written in such a way as allow your doctor to easily look up the research to validate the claims and treatment suggestions. No need to take the author’s word for anything, you and your doctor can read the research. It is recommended that everyone works with a doctor to determine a treatment plan. Though everyone’s condition is different, you can be feeling much better in as little as 2 weeks, naturally and without risky antibiotics. Review: GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK! 10 STARS! - To the author, John Herron, I am unsure that you will see this review, but I am posting it in case you do, to share my sincere gratitude. As well I am adding this review, so others can view how this protocol helped me. I started writing this and it grew and grew. So, I revised it to attempt to shorten it (tough for me as I am very wordy, once I get going, sorry). Thank you. Thank you. THANK YOU! Your amazing, well researched, well organized, all-encompassing book, protocol and pre / probiotic (Phage Complete) have changed my life. I was so very ill I lived on my bathroom floor because of gut pain, bloating and chronic constipation. I had seen countless doctors, none of whom could diagnose what my issue was. One even told me it was in my head. No, it was in my gut! Another told me to take Miralax 5 times per day, for life, because I would just have to learn to live with it. Because of your book, I requested a SIBO test and this was my predominant issue. After following your natural protocol, I am so much better. Quality of life is 200% better. Your book encompasses so many issues that could affect one person. How you figured all of this out and put it together in a comprehensive way that makes sense is beyond me. Your AWESOME prebiotic and probiotic, Phage Complete, has also been a huge game changer for my gut health. My family also thanks you, as I was not living, was barely existing. A health issue goes beyond affecting the individual, it affects their family as well. So, anyone with gut problems, you must read the book and determine what your main issues are and follow the suggestions. You will become SO empowered with knowledge. You can join the Facebook Group and get even more information, specific to your issues. Phage Complete is also a must in this protocol. You will become an expert on your specific issue(s). The book is beyond well researched, with links to scientific studies, backing up the protocol. It works. It is as simple as that. There is not usually just one specific issue of the gut, in my experience, oftentimes it is several things – one can utilize the book to help determine your issues and then customize your approach, based on the information discussed in the book. Many want a quick fix and to not have to change their diet. No one pill from a doctor will cure your gut issues, it is a diet and lifestyle change – and you will feel so much better for it. Your quality of health and life will improve, as mine has. So, John Herron, I could keep writing, but will stop here. Your book and help have been beyond invaluable. You are a wonderful individual, truly a genius, in fact! Thank you! :) Review: If you're looking for answers, this is the book to read! - If you're searching for answers to digestion issues (and more), look no further. You'll need to read this book carefully to find the sections that are applicable to your situation and what supplements to take to set you on the road to recovery - but I can assure you, it's all well worth it. So far, So good!
At the risk of divulging TMI, I've been diagnosed with GERD and IBS and having some serious gastrointestinal issues. This book provides the blueprint I've been searching for to get healthy again. I've just started reading and implementing the advice given in the book so can't say long term, but just starting with step one - eating/drinking natural probiotic foods such as Kefir and increasing my probiotic intake overall - have already helped tremendously this week! Yesterday I read about the diet, downloaded the safe/unsafe foods list from the website, ate only safe foods and this morning for the first time in months I did not wake up with gas, bloating, diarrhea and nausea! I love how all the information the author provides is backed up with scientific research. I also love that the author isn't trying to sell me a bunch of products. He provides information about what has worked for him, and that's great, but he also invites the reader to go natural and make or grow their own or find their own best product brands. He's not trying to sell me a brand he gets a commission on, so I feel I can trust him more. There is plenty of support, too, from the website to Facebook, a helpful community is growing around the protocol. It had not occurred to me that all my other issues from obesity to psoriatic arthritis to fibromyalgia to diabetes may all be connected to the same root issue - an unhealthy and unbalanced gastrointestinal environment. I'm very excited to build on this start and improve my health. So far, so good!

Just be careful and consult your doctor for analysis of the mentioned studies before making changes
As many other reviewers have mentioned, one thing this book does well is collect and quote from existing research on SIBO and the other GI issues. I've seen many of the mentioned studies in other places but this book was more comprehensive and helpful in finding more that I could then look at myself or ask my doctor about. However, even though Herron has read many studies, he's not a health expert and many of the recommendations in the book are based on his incomplete and hyper-focused knowledge. No one wants to recover from SIBO only to suffer a heart attack. I read more than one claim in this book that has a wealth of evidence refuting it and that went against guidelines from the American Heart Association, CDC, etc. It would likewise be a shame for people to stop exercising because a non-medical professional read one study about cardio and inflammation and didn't have the wealth of knowledge to understand it in the context of all other existing evidence. This book may be helpful for finding new ideas that could be beneficial without being harmful, such as skipping the NSAIDs or eliminating alcohol, but it should be considered the first introduction to any ideas it presents and readers should definitely speak to their doctors to determine whether any of the advice contained might be dangerous to them given any other health considerations they have. The enthusiastic following of people on Facebook makes me a little nervous, because while support and community can be critically important, there seems to be a cult of personality where people are receiving medical advice from someone based on their own personal experience who does not have the knowledge of the human body to know whether some of his suggestions could actually be more harmful to other aspects of health than they are helpful to curing SIBO.

Adds research info to SCD/GAPS/FODMAPs concepts but organization is lacking
Highlights • Fairly comprehensive review of underlying conditions related to bacterial (SIBO) and fungal (SIFO) overgrowth in the gastrointestinal tract • Collates a lot of disparate information on antimicrobial herbal supplements that is otherwise difficult to find, and ranks the most commonly used ones in order of benefit-to-risk • Combines concepts of the SCD, GAPS, Fast Tract, and FODMAPS diets in much the same way as the SIBO Specific Food Guide (SSFG) by Dr. Siebecker and the Bi-Phasic diet, but it goes one step further in discussing the benefits of fermented foods over probiotic supplements and lays out a list of the commonly used herbal antimicrobials and their relative specificity with regard to which microbes they kill (i.e. narrow vs. broad-spectrum) Dislikes • There is not a very clear plan or sequence of steps laid out to heal your GI problems; rather, the author provides all the components to be combined in whatever manner suits your particular GI problem • The “Allowed/Disallowed Foods” list is not thorough enough, seems like an afterthought, and appears to contradict some of the information found earlier in the book (e.g. yams and parsnips are allowed despite containing complex starches/carbs) • The information is fairly scattered with poor organization • There was a clear lack of editing The Gut Health Protocol includes much of the information to be found in other books on IBS and SIBO, and it adds a handful of new observations I don’t think I’ve seen in other books. For me, the novel information boils down to an emphasis on fermented foods and soil based organisms (SBOs) because of their diversity in microbe strains and their inability to over-colonize the small intestine. I’ve had minor success on the Fast Tract diet and major success on the SCD/GAPS diet, but I’ve always wondered exactly how fermented foods are interacting with my GI tract. This book makes it clear that the diversity of microbes found in fermented food is purely beneficial and not detrimental (will not make SIBO worse), that fermented foods should probably be used from the very beginning of the diet, and that SBOs may play an equally important role in the healing process. Other things that the books discusses, which I have only otherwise learned through my Naturopath, include the need for using biofilm disrupting enzymes to expose pathogenic bacteria to antimicrobials, and which antimicrobials are least likely to act like broad-spectrum antibiotics in order to preserve the beneficial bacterial colonies you still have. Overall, I would recommend this book for the pieces of information that are very difficult to find elsewhere. You’ll have to look past the poor grammar and lack of editing, and instead try to applaud the author's effort to deliver a comprehensive view of the approaches available for healing numerous types of interrelated GI problems. If you are looking for a diet plan, the SCD and GAPS plans (which are virtually identical in the foods they allow) would be an excellent place to start, along with Dr. Siebecker’s SSFG plan to eliminate FODMAPS early on in the diet. I would use The Gut Health Protocol as an additional resource for guiding the use of fermented foods, probiotics, and herbal antimicrobials, as well as for other information you may not find elsewhere.

A great resource for healing digestive disorders
I don't as a rule write book reviews for Amazon. But this is a fabulous book for anyone with gut issues, especially of the poorly defined kind such as SIBO, leaky gut, inflammation, dysbiosis, GERD and many other intestinal disorders that don't rise to the level of IBD but are hugely disruptive to lives and health. Mr Herron has done an enormous amount of research and reading of hundreds of medical articles and research studies and coalesced that knowledge into a protocol he's done himself to bring his SIBO and Fructose Malabsorption into remission, and literally healed his gut. For all of us who suffer from similar disorders who have spent years, even decades, searching from one Dr to the next for answers and helpful treatment, all to no avail, The Gut Health Protocol is a very viable and useful option for treatment modalities. I also have both SIBO and FM and have had both for over 20 years now. I too have spent gobs of time and money trying to find medical advice and physicians who have useful and healing treatment to offer. It is a great benefit that due to recent medical research, we now know a lot more about the origins of the damage that causes SIBO and other ongoing digestion challenges. But the treatment options haven't been very helpful, given the many diet and supplement and Rx recommendations I and many others have tried over the years, though I know the M.D. clinical physicians I've seen have done their best. But Mr Herron's book takes the knowledge currently available about the cause of these problems and deeply researches the medical literature across many disciplines for practical and demonstrably helpful treatments that have been documented in many different studies. He cites over 375 such papers and published research in his book. And importantly, he's tried all the suggestions he recommends, clearly is making no money at all on any product he recommends, and has improved his own gut health enormously. I have had the first positive signs of improvement in my SIBO and FM in over 20 years by following his protocols, though it's important to state that it's a long process and there are ups and downs along the way. And as with any treatment, it may not work for all patients who try it. And, given the huge amount of information in the book, we all have to put in the time to truly study it in detail to understand how it can benefit many of us. But the underlying nutritional healing of the gut that The Gut Health Protocol lays out makes great sense once you understand how the human gut is meant to work….and to be fed, to both heal and keep our digestive systems healthy. So if you are looking for a new option or don't know what to do next to try to improve your gut problems, The Gut Health Protocol is a clear, thorough road map for treating your gut disorders and is supported by all the cited medical information Mr Herron has read and distilled in his book. Even if you decide not to follow the recommendations, the knowledge you'll gain by reading his book will serve anyone well who has, or knows someone who has, one of these relentless, not clearly "figured out" gut disorders that so compromise many people's lives today. This book is a bargain at the price. I'm very glad I bought it and can recommend it highly.

Great Practical Guide to Better Health! Must Read!
So much of our health is related to our gut. If things go wrong there it can cause a cascade of other problems down the road. This is an excellent book written by someone who went to a lot of trouble researching the topic to get to the bottom of his problem with gut health. Most doctors treat GERD or SIBO with prescription drugs which only treat symptoms and never fully resolve the problem. If you have yeast infection of the gut, most doctors won't acknowledge that it can even be possible unless you have AIDS. This book goes deeper into dealing with causes and taking action with diet and supplements. Not only are there foods which you should eat for gut health, there are definite foods, drinks and food additives that you should avoid. By making changes to my diet and adding herbal and nutritional supplements according to the protocol laid out in this book, I have made tremendous progress in regaining my heath and well-being. I still have a way to go. Leaky gut and/or inflamed intestines will take more time to fully heal than the time it took to get out of whack. I am on the road to full recovery and I will never go back to my former eating habits and lifestyle. I want to personally thank the author for researching and detailing such a fine resource.

Time and money saver
If you have gut issues, get this book. It will save you time and money. Let me explain. I live on a very limited income and am always reluctant to spend money on health books or supplements even if I feel they might help, because I'm literally that broke. But in this case I really really needed some guidance. I quickly learned I made the right choice. Because within a couple hours of reading I already understood more than I'd learned through hours and hours of online searched, Facebook gut health forums, websites etc. John really knows his stuff (he's very helpful in his FB group too). I had been very confused about what supplements I should buy, what I should and shouldn't eat, just where to start in general. It immediately cleared all that up and tells you where to start. I already had a fair bit of knowledge about gut health and natural treatment going in, but mostly about colon health, and now I suspect (more or less know) I'm dealing with small intestine and stomach issues. This book instantly cut through a ton of confusion and saved both time and money in the form of research time and haphazardly guesssing which supplements to buy--and when. It's what it says it is--a protocol. Not just a mishmash of information, but a strategy and plan. Don't guess! Educate yourself w/this book. You'll progress w/your healing ten times faster

Well worth every penny!
I've been seeing a private specialist since 2013 for ME and in 2015 was diagnosed with SIBO from private testing. I have been paleo since 2013 but the clean eating didn't seem to improve my gut. In 2014 I also added in a ketogenic diet (very low carb and high fat), which helped my gut somewhat (low carb seemed to help) but it didn't solve my gut issues. After a year and a half going through the nhs (utterly useless!!) I decide to buy this book. At first I got it on kindle but loved it so much I decided to get a hard copy. It's got a full detailed protocol to help directly deal with sibo as well as other gut issues. It explains the kill phase, the heal phase and then the maintenance phase. It's got so much useful information as well as links to websites, studies and research. It also discusses diet too. The best thing is that you tailor the diet and protocol according to your needs/ issues etc. As I have other health issues I've been following an AIP (auto immune protocol diet) as well as low fodmap and ketogenic. I have been following this protocol since October 2016 and it's the most improvement I have had. I would recommend buying the hard copy of this book as you need to flick back and forth through the pages which can be a hassle on the kindle version. It is quite repetitive in parts, and in some places can be a little confusing. Eg supplement recommendations won't have doses listed until a lot later in the book. However I would still recommend as it is so detailed and also gives you links to further reading if you wanted to. It's also one of the only detailed sibo protocols I've come across. A lot of protocols for sibo are vuage or limited. There are only s very few recipes in this book (very very few) but it has so much detail on what sibo is, how it can effect you, what you can do to heal, why to do certain things, why to eat certain things etc. There is a social media group for this book too where you can join and ask questions. The author (John) even answer your questions and is really helpful. The only down side as such, is the supplements can be expensive when you add them all up but again, it's still worth trying.

A recommander
