Q: Is this better than a maple stand?

A maple stand may have some good points, but the Auralex absorbs vibrations because of its foam layer. The base layer is reasonably solid. A good combo. A maple base would probably need some sort of absorbing footers.

Q: Are the dimensions given for the bottom piece or the top piece? What are the dimensions of the bottom ?

They are the same size since they are joined permanently together. It is not two separate pieces.

Q: Does this platform actually hold your turntable level? Since it is foam on the bottom I imagine it might not level the turntable very well.

This is a very high quality firm foam. You could likely stand on it and it wouldn't depress. Keeps the turntable very level and works amazing.

Q: Can I use it as a drum riser ?

I don't think it would make a good drum riser. May be suitable for a small guitar amp platform.
