Is the red light like a laser pointer? I need a tiny beam like a pointer a speaker would use while giving a talk with visual medi.

No, the red light light does not act as a pointer. Nothing is projected from it. The red lights will blink though. Sorry, this is not what you need.

Can it be turned off/on without cycling through the modes?

Nope. You have to cycle through the modes to turn it off.

is it a separate button for just the red light?

Yes, there is a separate button for just the red light.

Will light adjust down if I'm drawing?

Yes, at a 45° angle. Since you'll most likely be looking down a bit while drawing, that should be enough to light your canvas/drawing. :)
