I was hoping I’d re-found an old series…
I just reread Double Whammy (book #1) from my library after reading it several years ago and and it was pretty fun. I didn’t remember much about it from the first read, and I did think to myself, I wonder why I don’t have any other books in the series? Now I know. So I got this second one and honestly, skimmed about half of it. I don’t need a fun book to be ALL believable, but I’d appreciate it more if more of it was, than not. It was difficult to follow the fractured, jump all over the place trying to be funny, story lines, jobs, plot. There was a plot and a good one, but talk about a book full of ADHD. And I LIKE books with ‘roads that branch out’ leading to various but connected story lines. This one fell short and I rolled my eyes so much. Davis came across as a bit narcissistic, neither she nor Bradley could stop their ‘importantness’, or their job as first priority, to care much about each other. Words don’t quite speak as loudly as actions. I sorta didn’t like Davis. I’ll read some more down the road and hope the next book won’t be quite so chaotically annoying. The author is a good writer, but maybe I’m too old for books like these.

Love this series, but....
Let me start by saying I love this series and this book is a ton of fun in my opinion. The characters are unique, as are the plot lines and settings. It's also laugh out loud funny and you can't beat that.I also like that Davis gets smarter as she goes. (I have a pet peeve about main characters that make the same mistakes in book 4 that they did in book 1. You end up hoping they're the victim in book 5.) Anyhoo.... as much as I liked this book and this series, 2 things bothered me. First, in the beginning a character is left for dead in a trash bin, but we never actually hear how and there's no investigation. Second, and this is the biggie, i was disappointed that you're not actually told who the murderer is in this one. It ends very abruptly as if a few pages were left out. A few of the characters speculate, but there appears to be no actual investigation or conclusion on that point either. Odd in a murder mystery. As Davis might say, "(Bummer. Bummer. Bummer.)"Read it anyway - you'll be entertained and you can choose your own wrap up.

Another Davis Way hit!
Gretchen Archer again proves her talents for serpentine, fast-paced adventures with Double Dip, the second Davis Way caper. As in Double Whammy, Davis Way is still working at the Bellissimo Casino as body double for the casino owner's wife, Bianca (who makes Cruella DeVille look like Mary Poppins), and as secret casino security agent, tasked with hunting out fraud and vice within the casino. Davis is also still besotted with her lawyer love Bradley Cole, although the honeymoon period has waned and they seem to be heading for a rough patch. However, Davis has no time for fixing things with Bradley Cole (who is just as busy) because the story immediately dives into Bianca troubles, a missing person, and a casino caper which quickly jackknifes into a bigger-than-casino mystery. Twists and turns abound. So do broken hearts.I'm a huge fan of Archer's humor. Love the snappy pops and cracks to Davis's thoughts and dialogue. You are forced to pay attention in these stories, no drifting along, because words are not wasted when Archer's writing. I continue to compare her to Carl Hiaasen, of whom I'm also a fan. However, Archer's first person point-of-view makes her struggles more real. I loved the romance problems between Davis and Bradley Cole that continued to pile up in the story. I love that Davis will not just wear her heart on her sleeve, she'll tattoo it on her arm for Bradley Cole.

272 PAGES YOU'LL WANT TO READ AS FAST AS YOU CAN!
272 PAGES YOU'LL WANT TO READ AS FAST AS YOU CAN! Davis Way, Secret Weapon of the fabulous Bellissimo Casino, is back in action making Double Dip another delightful read! Once again Archer has managed to fill Double Dip with a great storyline that will keep you on your toes as you follow along with Davis' romance with Bradley Cole, her situation with her ex-husband, her coworkers Fantasy & No Hair, her boss, being the body double for her boss' very unpleasant wife, her family back in Pine Apple, AL, and trying to solve the disappearance of a very important little old lady. Just what part does the So Help Me God Pentecostal Church in Beehive, AL play in the disappearance? As always, Davis is one busy girl! Davis and company are all believable characters. We probably all know someone that reminds us of EVERY character in Double Dip whether we want to admit it or not. Another masterful story by Gretchen Archer. You will be thoroughly entertained from start to finish!

Carl Hiassen's and Sophie Kinsella's Love Child Scores Again!
Gretchen Archer has done it again--and even better this time--with the second installment in her series of mysteries featuring casino detective, Davis Way. Ms. Archer has carved out a niche all her own. Part mystery. Part police procedural. Part comedy. Part romance. Part chicklit. It’s as if Carl Hiassen and Sophie Kinsella had a love child, who grew up to become a casino dick. What really animates this literary alchemy, however, is Archer’s sardonic sense of humor and sparkling writing style. She’s a master of humorous parenthetical phrases (no, really) … characters so bizarre and eccentric they could only be drawn from real life … and comedic situations that sneak up on you before you realize how hilariously outlandish they are. For example, the novel contains what must be the funniest funeral scene in history! All this is set against a backdrop that Archer appears to be intimately familiar with, the behind-the-scenes gears and dials of a very large and very glamorous casino. I loved Double Dip and I eagerly await the next Davis Way Crime Caper!

This a light, but quite fun read. It follows on from Double Whammy. Will look out for the next one.

Fun, Warm, Silly and Serious - read all about Davis Way!
Double Dip and its predecessor, Double Whammy are two of the most fun books I have read in 2014. We are introduced to the wonderful and very flawed Davis Way and a motley collection of friends, family members, work colleagues and new lover. Set in the south of USA and centred around casinos we find Davis moving town (actually took place in Double Whammy) and stumbling into a role at a casino to ‘stand-in’ for the general managers wife (again, this happened in the first book). Along the way she uses her police training skills to solve some very interesting mysteries (crimes) at the casino, while getting her into plenty of trouble. She is a very funny person, who handles and mishandles lots of interesting and challenging situations. Relations with friends, family and her lover Bradley Cole go haywire in the middle of the book and it is amazing that Davis can juggle so many things at once – but unlike other literary super heroes, she does drop the ball and put herself at risk. The last few chapters of the book are wonderful and hilarious. It would make sense to read the two books in order to help have all of the characters and relationships clear. The author, Gretchen Archer, has written a great story (series), bringing to life a very funny, likeable, believable (well its fiction, so suspend reality just a bit) and endearing ‘hero’, Davis Way. She has a knack for humour, but it is neither forced, stupid or over-complicated. A genuinely good read that makes the reader want another book, soon please!
