A COMPREHENSIVE ACCOUNT OF ITALIAN HISTORY
Thoroughly enjoyed this account of the growth and decline of the Italian Empire throughout the ages. This is narrated in an easy to listen way and is full of interesting facts. I will definitely listen to this audiobook again and again to glean every fact given.

Good book about the history of Italy!
Interesting read I wish there was a little more history of the last century of Italy. But it was a good interesting book. Didn't realize that Italy was not really a republic until 1946. Being Italian that was the year I was born.

Uncaptivating, Dry, and Shallow
Captivating History is a good concept, but it is pooly executed here. The book presents some good information at times, but it is dry reading. It is poorly written. The topics covered and emphasized are puzzling at times - some being totally off topic. When referencing ancient place names, maps would have been helpful. Some of the analysis of the politics & religion of the eras is shallow and inaccurate. To be clear, this is NOT a scholarly book. It has no index, not footnotes, and does not even name the authors of the two separate manuscripts (history of Italy and History of Rome).

Neither Captivating or Cohesive or Current
Although this two-part book is basically divided into chronologically- arranged chapters, the chapters often talk of peoples, regions and events without giving enough context to put info into perspective. Book also falls short with respect to its coverage of the country's more recent history. Italy's recent history, which essentially covers Napolean to Italy's unification in 1946, is not only not very current, but is dealt with in 15 pages. Then there is a 2-page conclusion which advises us that Italy's current regional divisions came into effect in the 70's - no info on how or why.
