Can l have this aboard instead of flares ?

Hello, Please be advised that this item and the ACR ResQflare, or any flare in general are very different items. This item is simply a PFD light. It is a small handheld light that's waterproof and is only intended to illuminate a small area around you when activated. It is also meant to clip or strap onto a life vest. The flare is a much different item. Specifically the ACR ResQflare is an electronic flare that's meant to be a signal in distress when activated. It can either remain on the vessel or float in the water including the ability to right itself in rough seas. This electronic flare takes C-batteries and is USCG certified, replacing pyrotechnic flares. When activated, it is visible for 6 nautical miles.

Will it float or sink if (accidentally) dropped in the water?

It's waterproof, but it won't float since this is supposed to be mounted on your life jacket. The slim, lightweight and versatile design fits easily in a pocket or hangs discreetly when attached to a life jacket or backpack. The flexible lashing loops on the side of the product allow for multiple mounting options including the webbing on your backpack or straps on your life jacket. The Velcro® strap can be secured around the lashing loops and creates countless additional mounting possibilities. The light also comes with a clip designed to conveniently slide over your inflatable life jacket’s oral inflation tube for storing your light inside your life jacket.

Easy to fit to PFD and shape does not risk puncturing bladder on auto-inflate models. Note this is the steady, not the flashing strobe.

Great little light at a decent price. Does exactly what it says. I use mine on my offshore lifevest for sailing. Easily attaches and activates when it hits water. Could be a lifesaver, especially at night.
