Researcher John Mathewson (John Lithgow) tried to ingratiate himself with Paul Stephens (Christopher Collet), the science-whiz son of his new girlfriend (Jill Eikenberry), through a cook's tour of his facility. Unfortunately, Paul recognized some weapons-grade plutonium... and when he opts to borrow some for this year's school fair project A bomb he winds up the object of a government manhunt. Marshall Brickman's thriller co-stars Cynthia Nixon, Robert Sean Leonard. 117 min. Review: I love this film. - This is a super nice movie and I really enjoy it. It's not one you can get on Vudu or most services so I had to buy it. It's a great movie and fun for the whole family. I highly recommend it if you like WarGames. Review: Check it out! - This review is about the 2016 DVD release from Kino Lorber specifically. While it's a no-frills release only having a theatrical trailer and subtitle options, the quality of the transfer is absolutely stunning. They put considerable effort into cleaning up the source material. Colors are vivid, black levels and brightness are good, and the picture is sharp and crisp. If you're a fan of the film this is the best looking version of it to date. The Manhattan Project falls into the same category as movies such as WarGames and Real Genius so if you enjoyed those movies you'll like this one too. While it doesn't distinguish itself in any particular way, it's a solid entry into that genre and the performances by Lithgow, Collet, and Nixon are quite good.

Funny movie
Would rate it more like 4.5 stars, but it's just one of those funny and somewhat thought provoking movies I find entertaining to watch. There is depth to this movie without dragging it down. I have my doubts a movie like this would be made today simply because for this sort of theme modern writers would prefer to go darker and gloomy. I realize this sort of movie is not for everyone and no doubt even in its heyday people likely thought it was silly. But as a film to entertain its overall production scores in my book.

A decent Cold War film
Most people today may scoff at the idea of a high school kid developing a nuclear weapon for a science fair, all to make a point about the evils of said weapon. However, this movie does a good job of capturing the zeitgeist of the mid-80s. This is also one of the first movies I remember seeing John Lithgow in and he does a respectable job in this film. This movie may not appeal to younger viewers, but for children of the 80s and older, this will be a good reminder of the paranoia and concern during the Cold War. War Games with Matthew Broderick is also another film in this genre that I would recommend for a double-feature.
