Is a mordant needed when dying?

I have never used it to color fabrics or anything other than hand made soaps, which it does beautifully. I suppose it depends on what type of substance you're coloring.

Is it soluble in wax? Or does it sink to the bottom?

I use it to color lip balm in a mixture of oil and beeswax. The alkanet dyes the mixture and the solid particles fall to the bottom of the pan I'm using to mix stuff. It makes a smooth, vibrantly colored balm as long as I don't use the gritty stuff in the bottom of the pan. I don't know how it will behave without the oil. It is not entirely soluble.
