Seems to work just fine. Nice combination of 1G and 10G ports.
I’m using this in an unmanaged home network. I’ve been upgrading the connections between my workstations and servers to 10G. This provides a really nice combination of ports in the office. Allows me to connect in a10G run to my main workstations, a other 10G run to my servers in the next room and plenty of 1G ports for connections to printers, my internet connection, and off to entertainment systems around the house. And the SFP port will come in handy for a future backup server I want to locate in a work shed on the property to provide a remote backup in case of disaster. I’m just using it in its default configuration. Have not tried connecting to its web server or modifying any settings as the default seems fine for what I need. Unlike others who said it seems to run really hot, the temperature doesn’t seem overly high compared to a couple 5 port 10G and 2.5G switches I have. I did put teller feet on it (about 3/8 inch) than the very low ones they provide in the box to provide a bit better air flow around the bottom. This send like it would be a good change for the manufactured to make. Also I’m not using quite all the ports currently (6 of 8 1G, 2 of 3 10G, and the SFP port is unused. I’ve only had it a couple days, but quite happy with the purchase so far. Seems like good value fir the cost.

It works great 👍👍👍
I modified mine and wall mounted, have not had a heat issue once, I ran fiber to a Media server and nice 10gb transfers. I static iped the switch and plan to utilize the vlan feature once I upgrade my router, was impressed as a test and called they're tech support and wow English speaking and was knowledgeable as far as the product, I only said I will need to route the packets with a vlan port from router and they acknowledged so they know their product. I'm not worried about the warranty for my minor modification. Definitely an inexpensive way to upgrade your network speed, Ideally I will hook a 10gb router in play in a few weeks then or look at another Zyxel product that has more fiber connections and make the whole network fiber backbone! Yes I know my mod isn't perfect, but good enough, you could also use heat sink compound and put a lot on the 10gb end of the aluminum heat sink to help. Dremel works good with steady hand. My day job is Network everything so I want small secure manageable network for home, I respect the geeks out there that want a rack in their basement and full blown, I'm just older now and like to do other things. I have all the same power with these little space saving devices as they do. The new TPLink BE24000 might be added.

10GBe ports are finicky with long runs, Switch runs HOT!
EDIT: The replacement switch has been working fine for some time now with no issues so I guess the original switch was indeed faulty. Switch still runs hot and RMA unit came with a pretty bad dent. Changing rating from 2 stars to 4 stars. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was using this switch to primarily connect my main computer to my TrueNAS server via a 10GBe connection. When I first got the switch, it worked fine for a couple of months then one day when waking my main computer from sleep I did not have a network connection. (Network connection showed as unplugged) Restarting the computer did not restore the connection. I then restarted the switch and the connection was re-established. This worked off and on for a few weeks, each time restarting the switch restored the connection. Then recently the same issue occurred but this time restarting the switch did not restore the connection. No matter what I did, I could not get a connection. After many hours of troubleshooting I discovered that the switch will no longer connect via my 160ft CAT6 run on any of the 10GBe ports. Not even attempting to force a 5GBe, 2.5GBe or 1GBe connection will work on any of the 10GBe ports. It sometimes works on a 1GBe port but not consistently. Often getting an identifying network message on the network adapter that never resolves. I confirmed that a shorter 20ft run works fine on the 10GBe ports. 160ft is within their 55m (180ft) claim albeit close to the max. So did my 160ft run go bad? To rule out that there could be something wrong with the 160ft run I proceeded to test the run with a cable tester and it passed. I then bypassed the switch and connected my main computer directly to the NAS using the same run and found no issues establishing a 10GBe link. I don't understand why all of a sudden the switch no longer works with the 160ft run. I'm going to RMA the switch and see if the replacement pans out.

Unstable, drops connections
I bought this switch to be the backbone of my home network -- let the router feed this switch with the SFP+ 10G connection and take all the LAN traffic off the router. It did great for the first 10 days, but then I started to notice I couldn't access the homepage. Then it started to slow down my network traffic indiscriminately. I unplugged everything except my PC and it limited my upload speed by half. I power cycled it and it started working fine. Then it happened a couple more times and that's when I decided to return it. I can't have this kind of instability. I ruled out all other parts of my network through methodical troubleshooting and unfortunately the problem is with the switch.

For a cheap no-frills 10Gb home solution. This is the way to go.
I have this hooked up between my Desktop PC and my Synology NAS using Cat 8 and it works flawlessly. No issues with the 1Gb or 10Gb ports. I still have one free RJ45 10gb to use. It also has one SFP+ port, but I don't use that. Web management is super basic, but more than enough for simple home usage. If you need to use this for any port forwarding, look elsewhere. Besides the 10Gb connection to my NAS from this switch, I also have a 1Gb connection to my NAS coming direct from my router, for remote and surveillance usage. I would highly recommend this if you don't need the options that come with fully managed switches.

A little warm
Update 3/29/26: The USB fan and heat sink solution works well. The unit has been quite cool and nothing has died. The internal fan is still dead, of course. It’s a shame because this switch has a lot going for it otherwise. Update 7/16/25: The first unit had a 10gb port fail within the warranty. They claimed this was not a known problem, but searching for this model and reading reviews indicates otherwise. I got a replacement and it's been going longer. I think the issue is that the crappy fan just dies after 6 months and the unit gets very, very hot. The switch was feeding a 75 ft run, so that likely made it worse. I moved to a SFP+ MM fiber module for the longer run, which likely helped. I measured 115F with the fiber connection and it will drop the speed of ports because it knows it's too hot. This is with two 10gb devices and one 2.5gb device. Fan has been dead for months. I just ended up getting some heatsinks and stuck them to the top. That made the heatsinks really hot. Next, I put a small USB fan on top of the heatsinks and that appears to keep it cool. It's still basically impossible to find a small switch with 4 10gb ports and 8 1gb ports other than this one. Original Review: This is one of the very few relatively inexpensive switches with a few multi-rate gigabit ports. It has 3 of those and one SFP+ port. It does get rather warm doing 10 Gb over copper on my 75 foot run, but when I switched to 25M of fiber, it ran much cooler. It is managed, but those functions are pretty limited. Basic VLAN and very, very limited bonding. But it's sufficient as a port expander for my home office with a 10 Gb link back to my core switch.

RIP, you died too soon
Put into use on Mar 24 2024, dead on Nov 16 2025. Its 602 day life served me well, but seems to be a little short... I will not be buying a replacement.

Compatible with H!Fiber Green SFP+ Cable, 10G SFP+ DAC
The Zyxel XGS1250-12 is simple to setup and the SFP+ port connected to the Zyxel XMG-108 using the H!Fiber Green SFP+ Cable, 10G SFP+ DAC at 10G without issue. In addition to the SFP+ port operating at 10G via the H!Fiber Twinax cable, I have a Synology connected on a 10GbE port and two 5GbE connected to the other high-speed ports. The fan is quiet; I think its running at 50% so it probably be louder if everything was on 10GbE. The switch does not get overly hot, but it is warm, I would not put anything on top of it or block the fan.
