The Super Miraculous Journey of Freddie Yates : Pearson, Jenny, Biddulph, Rob: desertcart.in: Books Review: This book is an absolute gem! What is the tick-list of things needed in a children’s book? • Great characters kids can empathise with (<- this is supposed to be a tick... come on desertcart!!!) • Fast paced, rollicking, action-packed plot that pulls kids in and occasionally trips them up when they least expect it • Rip-roaringly, side-splittingly, laugh-out-loudly funny • Humorous illustrations that encapsulate the story • And of course – good enough that as an adult I was delighted to hide away in the kitchen for a couple of hours and sneakily read the whole thing from cover to cover Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick! On top of this, Jenny Pearson somehow manages to ladle over a dollop of touching pathos that only adds to the charm of Freddie Yates. Absolute genius! My son needs more books as good as this. I need more books as good as this! (I also had a quick peak at the very few negative reviews of this book: they are from sniffy adults who don’t want their (grand) children exposed to words like ‘snot’ and ‘bum-blasts’. If I remember rightly these were exactly the words and things I found funny when I was the age of the intended readership of this book and TBH still find funny now…) Review: … not only for kids but for adults alike, with typical British politeness which just keeps adding to the humourous side even more! Strongly recommended read!

What a fantastic, heart-warming read this was! I pre-read it in advance of reading it to my 7 year old son and couldn't put it down. As many others have observed, Pearson cleverly blends rip-roaring humour with the sensitive and intuitive dealing of challenging issues such as grief, relationships and family break-ups. The author observes young people so well and as a fellow teacher, I would highly recommend this book to children at the upper end of primary and beyond. I'll probably wait a couple of years before giving to my 7yo though as I think a lot of the nuance and depth of this novel would be lost him at this stage. I have, however, immediately sent it to my 9 and 11 year old nephews and I look forward to enjoying this, and Pearson's other upcoming novels, with my children in the years to come!

My son loves it but only started to enjoy it at halfway through. Here are his descriptions: awesome, epic, funny, suspenseful sometimes and cool.
