It ain't easy going from "point A" to "point B," but.........
While this review may be a bit premature since my planned trip has yet to occur, the book has been extremely useful in planning a trip for my wife and I out west this summer. We will be going from Georgia to Vermont via a rather circuitous route: thru OK, AZ, TX, NM, UT, OR, WA and other western states and much of our trip will cover as much of Route 66 as possible. This book breaks down portions of still-existing segments of Ye Olde Mother Road into manageable distances and concomitant times so that even the most inexperienced traveler can determine where to enter/exit Route 66 (some parts of the old highway are now interstate and other parts no longer exist), where to find adequate housing (including real-live wigwams!), where to find decent food (no Wendy's or McDonalds, etc.) and where to have a camera readily available to shoot pictures of the America of years past. As a result, I've been able to develop a workable plan that will give us opportunities for both faster travel on some interstates as well as where to slow down and enjoy innumerable sights along existing parts of Route 66. Thanks to this book of useful and usable information, I anticipate a very memorable and exciting trip through the past, particularly since at my rather advanced age I am into nostalgia quite a bit. Just reading the book, let alone driving on Route 66 in a few months, takes me down Memory Lane.

EXCELLENT GUIDE!
We just did Route 66 from Chicago all the way to Santa Monica, using Route 66:EZ66 Guide for Travelers (2nd edition) as our guide. Not only was it one of the most fun trips we've ever done but it was also one of the most complete. When I was in college 50 years ago, classmates and I used to take drive-away cars on non-stop 40-hour trips home to California from Chicago along Route 66 at Christmas and in the summer, and a more leisurely trip has been on my bucket list for a long time. This book was fairly easy to follow with one of us driving and the other navigating (even when "the other one" is not considered a navigator). We tried to cover about 250-300 miles a day, reading the guide the night before so that we had a good idea what was coming the next day. Then we'd occasionally stop to re-read and make sure we weren't missing anything. Seemed like every duo or group of travelers we ran into was using the guide too! The Europeans and Australians we met told us "everyone" in their respective countries knows about Route 66, so they were fulfilling their dreams right along with us. The only thing we'd do differently is to travel less each day and take longer than 10 days. The format of the book is set up for either east-to-west or west-to-east travel. A few times we were a little confused because of the realignments of the route over the years, but really the only thing I can suggest to improve the book would be to indicate the approximate distances between turns and/or sights. Unfortunately, a few of the sights have closed even since this edition came out--inevitable, I suppose. Loved the spiral binding too. Take the trip, and take this book! You'll have a ball!!

I bought this book as I heard good reviews on it. I am British and planning to do sections of Route 66 over a few years. I have already driven the Black Mountains section through Barstow, Amboy, Oatman and Seligman as far as the Grand Canyon junction. Next month I am driving the LA section right through to Oklahoma City. As I plan to travel West - East, I was having difficulty finding guidebooks and anyone who has travelled sections of R66 will know how difficult it can be to find in some places! Although better for travellers going from East - West, this has a guide for those, like me driving in the "wrong" direction too. It is in a great ring binder fastening so it will be easy to use whilst travelling, appears to have great maps and additional places to visit if you have extra time. I have briefly looked through it and it looks like it will be a great help. I will see if it is as good as it looks and update my review on my return from the Mother Road.
