Hello, Thank you fir your question. The swing arm really helps if you are trying to draw a curve with a certain angle. It can also help you to be more accurate when measuring an angle.

Q: How do i change the the lead on the compass? it does not seem to be removal. i might do it incorrectly. thank you.

There is a small knurled knob just above the lead. You have to loosen that knob; 'righty tighty, lefty loosey'. Or Counter clockwise to loosen. You find it a little bit of a challenge to grab the lead and pull it down, to adjust, or all the way out. It's graphite, which is slippery. Don't need to take the knob off, just loosen it.
