Q: do these provide actual surround sound? or are they just extra speakers that will just be stereo?

It does provide actual surround sound, but it is weak and at least with the HW-K550, its the same signal as the virtual surround speakers on the soundbar with no way to disable them to use just these

Q: How do you turn them up? We have them working but they are so quiet that they are worthless

Here are the instructions from Manual, It worked for me. I hope this will help.Click on the "SOUND CONTROL" button on the Remote control.Press to select TREBLE, BASS, SUBWOOFER LEVEL, AUDIO SYNC,REAR SPEAKER, or REAR LEVEL.Then, use the buttons to adjust the TREBLE or BASS volume from-6 ~ +6, SUBWOOFER LEVEL volume from -12, -6 ~ +6.Press and hold the SOUND CONTROL button for about 5 seconds to adjustthe sound for each frequency band. 150Hz, 300Hz, 600Hz, 1.2KHz, 2.5KHz,5KHz and 10KHz are selectable and each can be adjusted to a setting between-6 ~ +6.If the Soundbar is connected to a digital TV and the video appears out of syncwith the audio, press the SOUND CONTROL button to sync the audio with thevideo. Use the buttons to set the audio delay between0 ms ~ 300 ms. In USB mode, TV mode and BT mode, the Audio Sync functionmay not available.To turn on or off of the rear speaker sound, select REAR SPEAKER in SoundControl, and then adjust the volume between OFF-RS and ON-RS by using the buttons.To control the volume of the rear level sound, select REAR LEVEL in SoundControl, and then adjust the volume between RS -6~+6 by using the buttons.

Q: Is the hub the "power source" or does it need to Bluetooth to your tv?

The hub is the amplifier that does power the speakers. All speakers must have a power source of some kind. If the hub didn't have wires to the speakers each individual speaker would have to contain its own amplifier and need to be plugged into an outlet. I think samsung has come up with a very simple and good working system for this. People who think there shouldn't have to be wires to the speaker from the hub do not understand how speakers work. The hub is what links wirelessly to the sound bar eliminating the need to run wires all the way across the room you only have them from the hub to the rear speakers. Syncing to the soundbar is not difficult if you have the directions, I believe there is a video on YouTube showing it. I do like the set I have. I feel the sound I have from my 455 sound bar with these surround speakers is very good. Especially for the price.

Q: How long are the wires that connect the rear speakers to the Hub?, are they rca cables?

You get about 8 ft but you lose some if you run them through the stand. They are not RCA, they are standard speaker wire with male clip ends for connectors
