what is the total width of the 12 pack strands?

It is about 4 1/2" to 6" wide. About every 10/ to 12" along the strand of ivy there are no leaves for 3 inches. I would recommend doubling up on your strands if you need it bushy. For my project which was using the vine climbing a tree I was able to use just one strand at a time. It did have an odor but I put it outside for a day to air it and the odor has not returned. If you want them to be as close together as in the image, how many feet do they cover? I want to get enough to serve as a 10' long backdrop

To be as close together like the picture you need to put them an inch apart so the 12 vines covers a foot across

Can i use it outdoors?

Yes you can definitely use it outdoors. If you plan on using it outdoors for months at a time I imagine the sun would fade them over time.
