BEGUILING!
Not at all my usual cup of tea, but I found this small-scale music-making completely beguiling. The 'To Julia' cycle, with the piano and string quartet accompaniment, was particularly effectve and uplifting. Quilter's music cedes nothing whatsoever of beauty or emotional content to the lieder tradition. Nor do these singers and musicians.As I am not accustomed to listening to this kind of music, I was not previously aware of a single one of the performers. That is my loss, because they are all remarkable musicians - it is a dreadful shame that musicians of this exceptional calibre cannot achieve the wide exposure due to them in today's musical world.It is invidious to pick out one from such a talented group, but I was particularly struck by Lisa Milne's beautiful, clear, bell-like soprano and her perfect intonation and diction. One can actually clearly hear and understand every single word she sings. If this sounds obvious and simplistic, you haven't heard much contemporary sung English music.Full marks to Naxos for an excellent recording and the notes with the words of all the poems.Worth several times the price!

Wonderful music, wonderful perfomances
Wonderful music, wonderful perfomances, wonderful sound. Roger Quilter was a skillful, tuneful composer and this disk is a sheer joy to the ear. The price is also wonderful!! For anybody who loves music and in particular British classical music this should be in their CD collection

Product met/surpassed my expectation--liked that.Didn't like that the CDs jewel case LITERALLY crumbled into sharp plastic pieces once I removed the plastic wrapping! Bought as,"Used: Like New", I believe. Otherwise, generally pleased with both the booklet & disc's condition. A minor criticism.

First rate performances of a neglected composer!
To start with... I am a devotee of this music! I studied and sang some of these when young (and still had a voice) and he was even less known in this country than now! He has great taste and a generous, in not dazzling, talent for melody. Many may find these songs too "English"! It's true a lot of them a little cute and folksy, but with patience and careful listening you will find many have a great sincerity and warmth. Also I find small sampling helps to maintain interest. Don't listen to the whole album at once. I guess I should have assumed that if you're looking at these albums you already know these things, eh! The seller is first rate and I would buy from them again.
