Good Product used wisely
I bought this item having read the reviews, all of the positive reviews are spot on, I have caught five squirrels in four weeks, but not baited every day, two of which were extremely canny creatures and one them escaped but could not resist the next days food contents although it was very wary it was recaptured. The recommendations are leave a trail of 4 or 5 hazelnuts or similar from just outside the trap and a few inside to entice the blighters and get them used to entering the trap and leaving quickly, leave a 'real treat' at the back of the trap beyond the footplate that trips the door. I used pieces of stale bread with some walnut oil on it and garnished it with peanut butter all in a very small muffin case, they could not resist, I have not had to wait long for a result as canny as they are but the reason one managed to escape is because put onto the grass lawn can stop the trap door from falling 100% as the grass can hold up the door ever so slightly.I overcame this by placing the trap in a short plank of timber which kept the grass away from the door baseline. Boy was the squirrel angry when he fell for it a second time it worked hard to open the door from the inside but soon realised that it was in vain. Two pieces of advice though;May and June are good trapping months as squirrels forage and cause damage to crops extensively having eaten their larder contents over the winter and this seasons nuts and berries have not matured enough to be eaten yet.Only set the trap up if 'you' are available to safely and humanely deal with the trapped creature within an hour of capture as with the early summer heat unnecessary distress can easily be caused to them. These traps are well made and effective I would highly recommend if used correctly and humanely..

Useless for grey squirrels
In a month, caught nothing. Squirrels walk straight past it, but do not enter. There is another version of this which has two doors: that way the squirrel can see the way out, so enters. This one with mesh at one end does not fool the critters. We have literally dozens of squirrels in our garden, carrying away apples, all fruit. Tried peanuts, and apples as bait - nothing went in other than mice for the peanuts - mice are too light to trigger it. The UK police are such a pain with gun licensing that one has to use traps instead (even though our garden is isolated, 1/4 mile from nearest other house or building). Poison can have side effects, killing other animals, so the search for an effective trap for them continues ...

Roland has a laugh.
If you don't mind wasting some money on rodent traps then these are at the more acceptable end of the price scale. Having purchased 2 of these I had high hopes of snaring our Roland I followed all the instructions and suggestions from other reviews but after 3 weeks no joy. I had one sighting where the rat was around it on top of it but not in it. On one occasion the bait had been taken and the trap activated but no occupant ( No Idea ) other than a very very small or thin rodent. I will persevere.

Cleaned out completely!! Wonderful trap.
This method of trapping is superior to rat traps, poison or shooting. This trap hasn't failed yet to catch whatever trips the plate. I used 2 of these for several weeks and TOTALLY cleaned out the chipmunks. There hasn't been even a sighting of one for the past 2 months. All in all, 22 chipmunks and 6 squirrels were captured and released over several weeks with the traps being set daily, usually placed close to the rodent's paths and burrows.Peanut butter is the key to success. Just dab the pressure plate with a small amount of peanut butter (Kraft works great) and it will draw chipmunks in. Though it's a bit messy, the cage can be easily cleaned off with the garden hose. The trap should be rinsed off after each capture/release.It's nice to relocate them to a nearby conservation area instead of killing them. I recommend keeping the cardboard box the trap comes in so you can drop the trap with the animal into it for transportation. It not only keeps them calm, but also keeps your vehicle clean. It's a good idea to wear gloves when opening the trap. Though all the released animals ran away quickly, I did not want to run the risk of being nipped by these animals, especially the squirrels. I also felt it wise not to handle the trap with bare hands until cleaned.Last point is that THIS trap is the one that works! Not the knock-offs or double-door ones. It's solidly built, dependable and will last your lifetime. This brand. This model. It works.

Seems well made, but the squirrels are too smart
This trap cage is well made, easy to set, and has a very sensitive triggering mechanism. I suspect it would be hard for a squirrel to take the bait without closing the trap. Once closed ( assuming nothing is in the way of the door), it's really closed. Nothing will escape that doesn't have opposable thumbs.But... I haven't caught anything, and my yard is thick with squirrels. I bait the trap with peanut butter, and a trail of peanuts leading in. I suspect that there's just too much to eat in the area, for the squirrels to need to take any risks. Maybe in the winter when they're hungrier I might have more luck.As with any cage trap, a downside is that you have to be around to check the trap at least daily. The need for regular checking is particularly disheartening when, as in my case, the trap is always empty, and the squirrels are just sitting around telling jokes and giving me the finger.
