Rick Steves Croatia & Slovenia

After glancing through some other well-known travel guides and this one, I used Rick Steves (the sixth edition published in June 2016) when I went to Croatia and Montenegro in September, and 99% of the book is spot on (we used TripAdvisor for a few different restaurant selections, which seemed to work a bit better for us in the places we went...and we had to supplement the book with TripAdvisor recommendations, particularly in Montenegro...otherwise, it would've been 100%...it's still absolutely worth it). I look forward to using this book again if/when I travel to Slovenia (which I hope will be in the near future!). The short chapter at the end of the book on Yugoslavia and the breakup of the countries and people groups was the most clear, concise version of events that I found anywhere else (speaking to local people there or learning more in museums tended to be very confusing and/or extremely partisan, which is not surprising considering the different perspectives). The recommendations on what to see and what to skip was very accurate (having experienced both), and the walking tours of the cities were very easy to navigate and gave us the most interesting overviews of the places we went. As a long-time Rick Steves fan, I highly recommend this book!

I always use the Rick Steves' guides for that initial orientation to a place. His team does a great job of addressing all those little details. How the transportation works, buying tickets, shops, currency, the various ways to get from here to there whether you've chosen public transportation or car rental. I haven't read any other guides (I'm talking about the big ones, not the local bloggers) that are as comprehensive. I always prefer to go a little more off the beaten path so I don't usually use his lodging and restaurant recommendations. When I do go with one of his food or lodging recommendations - they are just as promised.

I bought this book before a trip to Croatia and Montenegro. As far as I could tell, the information was concise and accurate. Since I was on a tour, I didn't take advantage of some of the author's self-guided trips but I found his descriptions of many places spot on. My only criticism is that it had nothing at all about the island of Vis, where I spent the last week of my trip. The island's history is typical in some ways of other Dalmatian Coast islands, but it has many unique features, ranging from Hellenistic burials to Tito's hidden shelters for people and torpedo boats. It would be worth including.

Great detail; extremely helpful by zoning in on areas not to miss; sensitive to budgetary limits; emphasized areas worth the extra cost; provides options for those who want outdoor adventures and others who aren't; good at describing roads, what to avoid and best ways to get to destination.

Got this book before my trip and thought I would only use it for a couple areas in Croatia, I was wrong! I used it for everything! I ready up about the walking tour info ahead of time and was able to give my travels friends info about what we were looking at, etc. We also decided to add some day trips to other countries from Croatia, the book outlined the best ways to get there and what places to go. We ended up exploring Mostar, Bosnia and Kotor, Montenegro. My friend I was traveling with joked that it was my travel diary as I was turning to it for everything! We went to some of the restaurant recommendations and loved the wine bar recommended in Split. I am so happy I had this with me on our trip, it made our navigating the cities SO much easier.

Rick Steves is so helpful. He has helped us find our way around all over Europe, finding fascinating places to explore, avoiding long lines, and encouraging travel.

well written, interesting and so accurate on advice. Wish he had given more info on souvenir shopping as I love coral and that is a big item they sell there.

I’m a Rick Steve’s fan so it’s easy to like all of his guides. I find them easy to use and with reliable advice.

Rick Steves does it again- used this book and had a lovely trip. Unfortunately, he could do nothing for the almost daily rain!!! I like his descriptions, his history-- whenever I travel, I invest in his books.

I liked the extensive information on the key sights in Croatia with detailed self guided tours of the major cities and tourist destinations. The book also has very detailed practical information about these sights, like the prices and times when sights are open. The only minor downside is that the book does not include some of the lesser known cities like Osijek

Unfamiliar territory to us, but Rick Steves helped us plan a trip for 2017. Helpful advice on where to stay, what bases of operation to use, and tips on car rentals and approximate driving times.
