Zack Snyder's Justice League [DVD] [2021]

I had intended to buy the Justice League film, but bought the Zack Snyder cut by accident. I did not want the Zack Snyder cut since it's filmed in what feels a bit like 4:3 aspect ratio. It's actually 1.33:1 aspect ratio, as opposed to a standard widescreen format of 1.85:1. Why? I will never know since it detracts from the movie somewhat. Although it's supposed to project the feeling of the movie, which makes no sense to me anyway. This aspect alone drops the movie from a five star to maybe a four-and-a-half star movie. Maybe four star. As soon as I noticed my mistake, which I think was Amazon's mistake in the listing, I bought the theatrical cut. Intent on returning the Zack Snyder cut. However curiosity got the better of me, and the movie was quite cheap for blu-ray. I read that this version of the movie was four hours cmpared to the theatrical at two hours. Plus I had been curious about the extended version since hearing about it. I watched the Zack Snyder cut and loved it. Considering it was a four hour movie, you'd think "really - who would have the patience for that?". That was not the case though. This version of the movie ran smoothlessly and seamlessly, until it was over. ... There's way more to get interested in with this version. Like the part when Diana Prince responds to the arrow fired at the ancient temple. Oddly now I have both versions of this movie which feels a bit much, but that's life. I can't express enough however at my dissappointment over the aspect ratio. While watching the movie, it does not stand out like a 4:3 aspect ratio experience, as it's wider. You forget about it to some extent too, as you're immersed in the movie. Just a shame that it doesn't have fullscreen for wide cinematics which are the natural viewing angle anyway. Plus widescreen is what we are fully accustomed to.

Superior to the theatrical (and butchered) cut in every way and it's hard to understand why a) WB didn't release this in the first place and b) why they haven't greenlit a sequel given the overall positive response, especially when their attempts to copy the MCU have resulted in poor profits for them. This is a long movie, though we have watched it many times now in one sitting as it is very engaging and feels more like two and a half hours. It follows about 60% of the core plot of the theatrical, but there is so much more depth to it, much like the ultimate edition of Batman V Superman. Each of the JL characters get their time to shine and the villain, now with the original intended design, is much better. The low point for me is that the music isn't quite as good as in Man of Steel and Batman V Superman, so the absence of Hans Zimmer is noticeable to anyone who enjoys the score as part of the experience. But it is still of a good standard and not enough of a concern for me to reduce this by a star. 5 stars all the way and easily better than any of the DC movies released since Aquaman (and it shows when you look at the box office returns).

This is so much more than just a superhero movie. I'm not referring to the 4 hour run time either (which will fly by). This movie is of it's time: only in the internet age could we the public influence a great Hollywood studio to reluctantly #ReleaseTheSnyderCut. A movie that is superior in every way to the version Warner Bros. released in 2017. That version was the very height of capitalism over art. WB had already given Snyder the opportunity to build a franchise by allowing him to direct Man of Steel and Batman v Superman. They knew Snyder was a visionary director who's previous material was divisive, literary, cerebral, introspective, technically stupendous, corny-at-times and laden with slo-mo. Yet WB saw an opportunity following the suicide of Snyder's daughter Autumn and pushed him out and brought in the director of 'Avengers' and 'Age of Ultron' to Marvel-ise the DC franchise (read: sexist, quippy one-liners, connect-the-dots plot, shallow characterization and expeditionary). That said, Marvel/Disney do make strikingly popular and profitable films. In his defence, director Josh Whedon was up against it: Most actors were out of shape for re-shoots or moustache-iode in the case of Henry Cavill (Superman). The studio had also mandated to reduce Snyder's 4 hour sprawling mythological epic to a 2 hour runtime to get more cinema screenings in during a day, (and hence generate more money). But the case against is quite damning: rather than splice the mass of material he already had, Josh Whedon went ahead with unconvincing re-shoots sometime employing some very dodgy, time-constrained CGI. He shrunk the roles of Cyborg and Flash (who are the very heart and soul of Snyder's Cut) and sexualised Wonder Woman and even Superman's mother!! He also tore out the beautiful soundtrack continuity that Tom Holkenberg would have offered and replaced him with past-his-sell-by-date Danny Elfman. Watching the Snyder Cut is cathartic. The completion of a vision Snyder started with Man of Steel. It tells the story of a person who is neither of this world or of Krypton. A refugee or an immigrant if you like. Life will not be sunshine and rainbows. But as with all heroes the hard path leads to realization of their place in the world. Clark decided to do the right thing given his extraordinary powers. Not because he had to or because it is his job. But because he *wants* to. Consequently, his ultimate sacrifice inspires others: Batman, Wonder Woman and all the rest evolve to earn their place as symbols of hope and faith. In these times of dysfunctional governments, creaking democracy and a global pandemic we could all do with some hope and faith and art.

Oh gosh! Where do I start? Well, let's get the negatives out the way... 1) The screen ratio! I mean, what? "4:3" ! Why? What for? To recreate the good old days of 35mm or to fit old box size & style TV screens? Totally unnecessary and detracts from, what is, a visually impactive tour deForce. Something like this NEEDS to be wide-screen. 2) Film length. 4hrs! On 2 Blu-ray disks. It took the length of a normal movie just to get to the point of the story. Then had to change disks to see the point of the movie. This is an infuriating level of script to screen padding. Every preamble scene is excessively drawn out. I mean, doing this to an entire film so it becomes 4hrs with no extra meaningfulness to it? That's an ego trip right there. And makes the need for 2 disks superfluous. 3) Documentary extras. After such a long wait with such high hopes and expectations... No inside story as to how this version came about. No behind the scenes of movie making. No comparisons of the 2 versions or how the new material was edited together with spfx. One short docu as a "character" teaser. That's it! So disappointing and unfair. 4) Colour degrading. Ok, this isn't a biggy. But could have brought the hue up a notch or two. Positives: Well this is some seriously heavy duty superhero movie. Done in all seriousness, with perhaps a little too much earnestness. This starts of as an all new film production. An unseen perspective of the finale of the previous film; Super V the Bat. We then get all the slow, long drawn out scenes that tell us what we already know. Tellingly, the character introductions are all very similar to the original release, though with the exception of Cyborg, Steppen Wolf and a series of new baddies to this franchise, but well known "Mr Bigs" to the DC universe. This brings in a whole new angle of story telling to this production. It's somewhat refreshing, but unfortunately all too familiar in presentation that it parady's the big bad guy in the Marvel stories (with similar ultimations and motivations). The characterisations and FX are ramped up with both Steppen Wolf and Cyborg. Their back stories have expanded greatly with a fresher look at how their pathways are somehow conjoined and its affect on the here and now. Their screen presence and dialogue is longer, stronger and more meaningful. Irritatingly, The Flash is still a bumbling stumbling geek, only more so! There is, however, more context to the relationship with his father. Batman's scenes are extended with a similar but slightly better delivered dialogue. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for WonderWoman. Not sure what Snyder was trying to achieve, but her humourous, sharp cutting wit had gone. Gone too was the daft scene where Aquaman makes a fool of himself to the entire team. But a welcome extension to all the fights with Steppen Wolf; in particular the final scene. But also that moment when Clark appears to those that have meddled in things they shouldn't, but had to. The reasoning to take such a drastic action is better fleshed out with the Snyder cut. All in all, it's a mixed bag of goodies and baddies. Superman is darker in both costume and, to some degree, attitude. But acts more in tune with a reawokened powerhouse ready to inflict revenge. Batman is characterised and performed brilliantly by Ben Affleck. He is, in my opinion, the best if them all, providing us with the greatest version of the Dark Knight since the original franchise began. Aquaman looks and is amazing. His presence seems much stronger and more credible. The entire Atlantien scenes are held together better and are much more powerful. WonderWoman seem to have been taken down a couple of pegs and her dialogue somewhat less authentic. Cyborg comes to the fore. More involved, more determined, more capable. Gone is the daft conclusion to the original version and there is more peril involved allowing The Flash to really step up instead of trip up! There are a great number of Easter Eggs. Snyder loves these: References to the previous version of this remake and a very telling shot in the longer scenes of the Justice League's walkabout in the Kryptonian ship. There are plenty to seek out. But... Maybe there will be a wide-screen release one day. Maybe DC will stop messing about with re-re-rekickstarting Batman. Maybe they will ensure the next WonderWoman film is as serious and well made as the first. Maybe they will get their act together and become more original in their dark storytelling, rather than trying to copy the formula and format of Marvel. Maybe!

I did not hate the original movie but I also did not love the original movie, it was a definite meh while Marvel kept delivering awesome films all DC had to offer was shrugged shoulders and indifference. The Snyder cut had long been whispered and the tragic reasons for it even needing to be do not really feel the need to go into that here and then lo and behold it was happening. So big was the final cut that it needed to be watched over two discs, an entirely novel approach for a blu-ray movie and one I thought confined to the bad old days of DVD. So was it worth the wait and the time to watch it, well yes and no, It is definitely too long and I personally would have trimmed at least 45-60 minutes that felt indulgent and unnecessary but we do get a Cyborg who is not a whiny little brat but is actually a fleshed out interesting and much needed part of the film, not a mere side plot as he had been. We also get Steppenwolf and Darkseid who prove to be much better villains than the original film had them be, we also lose Superman's mustache which is a big relief. I still don't like the resurrected Superman hero fight, it just seems so contrived that just because he loses his memory he becomes a stone cold killer? This ia a far better movie than the one Mr Whedon delivered and definitely worth watching, shame about the lack of special features though, I guess that will be coming in an ultra special edition to be announced.

Zack Snyder's Justice League is a cinematic masterpiece that delivers on every level. This four-hour director's cut is a vast improvement over the theatrical release, with deeper character development, a richer storyline, and stunning visuals. Snyder’s vision brings a darker, more emotional tone that perfectly suits the epic scale of the film. The extended runtime allows each hero to shine, with standout arcs for Cyborg and The Flash. The action sequences are breathtaking, and the new scenes, including the unforgettable Knightmare sequence, add depth and intrigue. For fans of the DC Universe, this is an absolute must-watch. A triumph of storytelling and filmmaking!

Frankly an epic sized movie (just over 4 hours long) that benefits hugely by its 4k presentation over the two discs, wasn't expecting it to be 4.3 screened, however was thought to benefit visually by releasing this way, in truth,. after a while you don't even notice the smaller screen. Though I last watched the theatrical-cut fairly recently, the way the storyline and character building gave the film a first-viewed feel. The Special-Effects were indeed awesome, a great super-hero movie experience indeed. This the version Zack Snyder bad wanted to be seen rather than the 2 hour theatrical one that graced the cinemas, double the length the story though following the theme of Bruce Wayne's efforts to put a force together to prevent the Darkseid and the legions of Parademons from conquering Earth as they had tried to do thousands of years before. Ben Affleck -Batman/Bruce Wayne Henry Cavil - Superman/Clarke Kent Gal Gadot - Wonder Woman/Diana Prince Jason Momoa - Aquaman/ Arthur Curry Ezra Miller - The Flash/Barry Allan Ray Fisher - Cyborg/Victor Sone Amy Adams - Lois Lane Batman and Wonder Woman are joined early on by The Flash, however, it takes a while to convince both Cyborg and Aquaman that the cause is worthy of their inclusion, all realize that, they cannot defeat the invaders without Superman, but, he's dead. Can using one of the mother boxes as Cyborgs father had done some years ago to keep his son alive after a deadly accident bring Clarke Kent back to life? ....they have to try. Have to say, worth every penny

I avoided the debacle that was the 2016 version of Suicide Squad, butchered by cowardly executives at WB. Unfortunately, due to the build up of Man of Steel and Batman v Superman, and needing to see the next film in the series, I ignored the red flags of the tales of studio interference and foolishly watched Joss Whedon's botch job of Zack Snyder's Justice League. Big mistake. Four years later DC fans got to see the film that should have released, and it's everything that's lacking in DC films today. Sincere, heroic story telling, high stakes and emotionally satisfying pay offs, eye searing visuals, beautiful music score, and most importantly a tone consistent with MoS, BvS and Wonder Woman, the direction the now fractured and irreparably damaged DCEU should have stuck with. If you want to see the best in straight faced comic book movies, always respectful of the subject matter and iconic characters, while simultaneously not lazily leaning on nostalgia, then you need to see Zack Snyder's Justice League. Let's hope we eventually get to see the sequels this wonderful film sets up.

My fav superhero move of all time

Oh boy, this movie is great! 4 hours and I never fell asleep or looked away from the screen once, every character gets enough screen time and the screen time they get is excellent storytelling, the pacing and transitions of the different parts of the movie move at just the right speed to keep you interested in what happens next, AND this version is R rated! Every fight has just the results you'd expect and add just the right impact to the events unfolding minute by minute. If you think ahhhh I don't think I can sit through 4 hours of Justice League, I can tell you that you will enjoy every second. The original movie and this cut of the movie are night and day, and if this version had made it into the movie as the original release DC movies would be seen in a different light today. This is DC's successor to Marvel's success, and this is actually what I think DC movies need R ratings, DC has different characters than Marvel does and DC's magic is with R rated storytelling because what works with Marvel - comedy and a balance of tragedy and levity, DC shine with brutality and raw realness. So buy this movie, you won't regret it and get some popcorn and soda or whatever you enjoy because you are in for a very good movie night with this one.
