Q: what happens when the battery dies? Does it default to OPEN or will we have to drill out the lock?

No battery this is a mechanical lock. There is also a security key that is provided that will open the lock as well.

Q: How many sides can you hang keys on?

There are four sides to hang keys. The back and front of the box and then the middle has two sides.

Q: What are the exact dimensions?

A bit of clarification. The case is 2-7/8" deep, but the lock adds 1" to overall depth.

Q: Is it wall mountable?

yes...very simple. The hinge is to the right....so just need to make sure your space (mine is inside a closet) accommodates the door opening in this direction (mine is mounted on the left wall of the closet so that when I open it I can see the keys).
