Two more of Frederica von Stade's albums make their debut on CD
This anthology includes fifteen of Frederica von Stade's albums and three discs of excerpts from a further twelve recordings in which she took part. The excerpts include all of Miss von Stade's contributions to "The Bernstein songbook", "Dvorak in Prague; a celebration", "Marliyn Horne: divas in song - a 60th birthday celebration", "Marilyn Horne, Frederica von Stade: Schumann, Mendelssohn, Dvorak - Lieder and duets", "A salute to American music" and "Richard Strauss: New Year's Eve concert Berlin 1992". Each disc is presented in a cardboard sleeve; disc labels and sleeve designs replicate the charming art of the original releases, although you need excellent eyesight to read the sleeve-back notes. An illustrated booklet contains very detailed track listings and a brief essay summarizing Miss von Stade's career. The texts and translations which accompanied the albums when they were first issued have been omitted. The cardboard box housing the discs is commendably robust. The Ravel concert and "Frederica von Stade Live!" are, I think, newcomers to the format, although some of the Ravel items have appeared on earlier CDs. To the best of my belief, the release of this compendium and the Monteverdi Il Ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria discs reported by Michael Wolff in his helpful comment below means that there is now only one of Miss von Stade's audio-only recordings that CD collectors are still awaiting: a Covent Garden song recital taped by Chandos but never released at all. (The list of Miss von Stade's video performances that have yet to appear on DVD is sadly rather longer, including the Rossini Bicentennial Birthday Gala, On the Town, Cendrillon, The Aspern Papers, Call Me Flicka and much else besides.)For Miss von Stade's fans, this collection is an essential purchase. People unfamiliar with the artist and wanting to sample her work might do better to start with one of the DVDs that benefit from her admirable acting. I cordially recommend Mozart: Le Nozze Di Figaro [DVD] [2013] [NTSC ], a Peter Hall production from Glyndebourne, featuring Kiri Te Kanawa's Countess; La Cenerentola: Teatro Alla Scala (Abbado) [DVD] [2005 ], a Ponnelle production enhanced by the beautiful cinematography of the late David Watkin; Idomeneo: Metropolitan Opera (Levine) [DVD] [2006 ], another Ponnelle production, notable for Pavarotti's performance in the title role; and Hansel Und Gretel [DVD] [2010] [NTSC ], richly entertaining if you can tolerate its dated staging.
